You mean there are some moose that will kill people? Never knew that. I imagined they were gentle... Do they do this unprovoked or only if provoked?

So if you got one when young (What are young moose called? Calves?) you might have a better chance of training them, I suppose? I wonder why if anyone has done this so far? I've heard of people domesticating and riding ostriches. Why not moose?

If I ever create a comic-book-superhero, I'd make him ride a moose!

Any animal is gentle if it isn't provoked. It's just really easy to provoke a moose. Usually when they're with their calves. Then they'll attack you for nearly any reason.

I'm sure it could be done, but with an animal that size, I'd just never really trust it. They're not animals that are meant to be domesticated. I mean look at horses. We've been training and breaking those for thousands of years, and they still attack people now and then. Except moose are more dangerous.

Oh, eh. I took that photo in my model railroad set. That moose is all of three inches high.

Deer can efficiently use their hooves to denude your bones. And they've been known to use their antlers to play "cat's cradle" with human intestines.

[quote]Moose are active throughout the day with activity peaks during dawn anddusk. They are good swimmers, able to sustain a speed of 6 miles perhour (10 km/h), and can run up to 35 miles per hour (55 km/h). Their eyesight is poor but their hearing and sense of smell areexcellent and so compensate. Due to a shortage of cones, which providecolour sensitivity, moose are colour-blind. Their retina is composedmainly of rod cells so would see the world as a spectrum of varyinggrey. Rods also provide excellent low-light and motion capability, butdon't give moose the acuity or sharpness of detail that humans enjoy.

Moose are not normally aggressive, however, they can be veryaggressive when hungry, tired or harassed by people, dogs, and traffic(sounds familiar!). During the mating season bull moose are often moreaggressive toward people. Mothers with young calves are very protectiveand will attack humans who come too close.

You can identify when a moose might attack if the long hairs on itshump are raised and it's ears laid back. A moose may also lick itslips.

Charges may only be "bluffs", warning you to get back, howevertake this seriously, even a young calf could cause significant injuriesfrom it's size alone. When a moose does charge, it often kicks forwardwith its front hooves. Unlike other animals, such as dogs and bears,it's usually a good idea to run from a moose because they won't chaseyou very far.

At the town where my family's cabin is, they will often post signs at the beginning of hiking trails saying "aggressive moose in area." :P They're not kidding either. People get hurt every year.
