I Got Some Hockey Gear!

I went on Craigslist and found a guy about the same height and weight as me who was selling his old hockey gear. It's the first time I've tried wearing all of the pads and everything. I kinda like how it makes my shoulders look broader... but how do you skate in these things?

Skating isn't too bad. :) Stopping is trickier.

Make sure you get a pair of socks (preferably a pair that matches your jersey), because people will laugh if you don't have any. ;)

I have socks! And they match my jersey too! :D (But you've got sharp eyes, because you noticed I didn't have them on in the picture). And I can easily do hockey stops -- with my right foot in front. It's when I try to stop with my left that I sometimes slip... and fall :sadder:

I quit hockey when I was still really young. I was never really that into it. Never really had stopping down. :P I know how to do it... I just never managed to do it right. :))

You should get a Flames jersey. It would make everything about 15 times more awesome.

Marie-Therese

Iginla is beating that dude down. I heart hockey.

My fiance is a hockey player, so I am a wee bit partial. No, he's not pro. LOL

Watching highlights of Ovechkin right now, that guy is nuts.

I heart hockey as well. :D

Niklas Backstrom is a beast of a goalie.

First, make sure you do some stretching/warm-up exercises.

Second, if you take a clinic or two you will get used to skating in the equipment. What have you signed up for, or are you just doing rat hockey?

Third, did you get a wire cage or clear face shield?

I need to take some hockey clinics. I'm just taking basic skating classes now, trying to get better at backwards stroking, and backwards crossovers. I could go for the rat hockey. They have an "E" league for beginners like me.

I have a wire cage. Would you recommend that, or a clear face shield?

If you're not planning on playing at a particularly high level, or competitive or anything, I would say that a half shield is perfectly adequate. Younger kids in minor hockey all have to wear full shields, and once it's not mandatory some people prefer none at all, but personally I think the half is a good compromise for anything.

Wire cage. Clear shields fog up too easily, and I have heard that the anti-fog sprays can break down the protective coating on the clear shield. Also, if you play outdoors in below-freezing temps, you can get a layer of ice on it from your breath freezing on it.

I disagree. I've seen a stick make it up inside a half sheild and hurt someone, plus you never know where a puck may hit in the face (I had a clear shield with a black mark I cannot remove where my nose is from a puck). A half shield will either not protect the lower portion of the face or it could deflect the puck weirdly.

Remember, too, he's just starting out.

It can happen, and there would probably be a couple times where he'd suffer some kind of minor injury that a full mask would protect, but for very low level hockey, I'm not sure that the benefit is really worth it.
