dUSt
I don't know if ppx thinks this or not, but many people get the wrong impression that phatmass is trying to bring hip-hop into the Liturgy. It is actually quite the opposite. In fact, we make it a point to explain to people that we make music that should NOT have a place in the Liturgy. There's even a song concept on our newest project that deals specifically with Liturgical abuses, and how we need to fight to keep the mass Sacred and Holy. I'm not sure if ppx is aware of this or not. Maybe he's opposed to all types of music, regardless of setting? I'm eagerly awaiting his opinion. ryanmeyersmusic
pretty sure this is a follow-up from the conversation in the "Catholic Punk" thread...
popestpiusx
Hey dust, I'm working on that in between a few other things. I am glad to hear that you make a distinction between liturgical and profane music. I’ll get it on here as soon as possible.

ilovechrist
ya, sounds a lot like the Catholic Punk thread.. except in there we were exploring for new C Punk bands... its true that we need to keep the Mass sacred + holy dUSt, but u didn't exactly finish---where does the hip-hop belong? i'm taking a guess on evanglizing, which i think it would be good to use... along with personal enjoyment
Oik
Hip-Hop, Rap and all that isn't made for the Mass (liturgy). It can and is used to glorify God and to spread Faith! It belongs wherever it fits, either used to strengthen the faithful or to minister to the unbeliever(or fallen-away) or a mixture of both.
follow_the_pelican
i'm taking a guess on evanglizing, which i think it would be good to use... along with personal enjoyment That sounds right, it is a very powerfull evanglizing tool. You can fit so much in a rap, put it to a dope beat, and it will stick. Example's, Sacro Song Two, the sex song; Father stan spit's more truth in a 4 minute rap than many people can do in 300 page book. Plus it sticks !!!!! rap is prob one of the most powerfull spiritual tool's we have to fight secular messages. Kids get down with the sound, then the message shines forth. Being a Catholic rapper one would think you would run out of topics;however, it is in being catholic that allows you to rap on a deeper level. Not only about ganstaz and guns and such, but universal truths. And all things pertaining to humanity, war and suffering, joy and new life. All of these fall under"universal" topics, which is what Catholic is,"UNIVERSAL". Plus you have all the dogmas, traditions, EVERY THING!!! any way, I am rambling now, forgive me? electricdisk
...but many people get the wrong impression that phatmass is trying to bring hip-hop into the Liturgy. It is actually quite the opposite...
You might be right about some people getting the wrong impression (although I never had that impression).... I was just thinking about that topic yesterday. I was thinking of putting a disclaimer on my CD, for the explicit purpose of telling people "not for liturgical use" (like my music would fit into mass - ha!). Why? Because some idiot in the future might actually try to do it (they might try to get the PM Cd played too) Why? I don't know, but weirder things have happened. People have generally lost the sacredness of the mass and are treating it as a "meeting place" or a general get together.... so why not have "fun" happy music? Like rap? or Techno? ****** Here is my ENTIRE MUSICAL PHILOSOPY.... summed up in a few points. 1) You wont catch me listening to "praize and worship" type music in my car driving down the road. I detest the musical style. 2) You WILL catch me listening to the phatmass CD. When every music type sounds like "praize and worship" (john michal talbot et all), 99.99999% of the listeners ARE ALREADY CONVERTED!!! It's Like preaching to the chior. That is fine and dandy for those who like that music - no problems. My mom likes that stuff. But I DONT. Jesus didn't only go where the "Holy" people were. He hung out with sinners and harlots and thieves. Kids who like the phatmass CD already like rap. But they like rap that is perverse, sinful and satanic (the stuff played on 99.9% of radio stations out there, clear channel etc...) Phatmass gives them an alternative. Same beat, same production values, different message. different message - get it? different message. ***** "My people perish for lack of knowledge" and we are carrying that knowledge back to the children/young adults, so they won't perish. dUSt
electricdisk is the official phatmass spokesperson. haha I like the "Not For Liturgical Use" warning. It'll definitely be on all future phatmass productions.
