Archaeology cat
Or the couple could love eachother, want to physically express this love but not neccesarily want a child. Even if the Church's position sounds good on paper (open to life, procreative, in the image of God) it really isn't practical for a lot of people. Raising children takes a lot of time and money and most people cannot financially support 5, 6, 7 and up kids. But I guess a hierarchy made entirely of celibate men without families to support may not understand this. You should read Angela's Ashes, they have a similar experience.
Kids really aren't as expensive as some people think. A lot of it comes down to how you go about things, and what things you think you need for your kid. And of course it is not a Catholic position that families must have lots of children, but that they should be open to life and have children as they can. If they truly can't afford another child, then abstain when the woman is fertile. That's 1 week out of the month in many cases, so it's not like there's going to be abstinence for 3/4 of her cycle or anything. If she's breastfeeding she may not be fertile for quite a number of months, as well.
NFP is a healthy means for parents to remain open to each other sexually if, for some legitimate reason, it is impractical for them to concieve at the present time. Think of it this way; technically, a woman could have 4 babies in three years. That's not healthy, and the Church recognizes that. NFP is NOT contraception. If God still wishes to play his part and bring a life into being, the couple is open to that. It's just being smart about each other.
dominicansoul
You sound like one of those typical health and wealth Christians. There are thousands of Christian families that are very poor.
...well, I'm not saying we didn't have problems, because problems are a part of life...and we definitely weren't "wealthy" in the sense that we owned lots of stock and had a private jet or an island getaway somewheres... ...but I do consider myself "wealthy" in that I've never needed anything...God has definitely provided me with all my material needs...and I attribute that to the fact that my parents gave us a beautiful lesson in trusting in God. I never worry about my next meal, what clothes I should wear...my house is paid for and owned by me...i own lots of property, (no payments on that except for annual property taxes..)...I don't have car payments (was able to pay for a brand new car, with cash, at the very moment I found what I was looking for at the car dealership...) ...it's exactly as Scripture says it will be... God is awesome! Now, can a condom do all that for you??? and yes...getting back to the original post...condoms are neither fashionable nor are they practical...you want to have an intimate moment with the one you love? Get married, never let anything get between the two of you, and be open to what God plans for the both of you... planned parenthood should be ashamed...77 years of lies...there's no such thing as "parenthood" when the two who make up the parenting can't trust God nor each other in bringing life into this world... I don't think they would be saying "God is awesome" when they cannot find a job to pay for the food to feed all those children.
missionseeker
well... I will say this: I am from a family of seven. We always had what we needed, mostly. Some months were harder than others and we had to scrape together. You know, add bread crumbs to the meatloaf to stretch it out, pay for milk with coins, sometimes the bills didn't get paid right away. I am struggling to put myself through school (11 classes and 25 hours of work a week) and such (plus I am dating a guy in Canada which is just... ). There is not a lot of extra. BUT I don't think I'd ever want to change that. If my parents had said "we can't afford any more kids" I probably would not have brothers. And while sometimes it is rough and sometimes you just want to cry and give up, none of wish that it wasn't.
