Nihil Obstat
This is yet another question from me about postures and proper reverencing of the altar and tabernacle in the sanctuary. I need to make the question really clear because I'm so frustrated at trying to read the GIRM. My parish is set up like this: altar front and centre in the sanctuary, lectern on the left side (if you're facing the altar), and tabernacle set well back behind the altar, still centre, in a small recess. So facing the altar is also facing the tabernacle. As I've said before, I do read at some Masses. Here come the questions: (again, I apologize as this will be very similar to my old thread...) In procession, do I genuflect or bow, or do nothing if I'm carrying the book of Gospels? My new priest carries the book of Gospels himself. Does that change what I do? When approaching and leaving the lectern to do a reading, do I bow or genuflect? Towards the altar or tabernacle, if I were to look directly at one or the other? Before or after Mass, if passing in front of the sanctuary, do I bow or genuflect? Now here's the most important part. Apparently our new priest said that he wants no one to reverence the altar or tabernacle after Mass has begun. Apparently this is a CCCB thing. I've never heard of this before and it sounds fishy. Does anybody have any idea what this could be about? I was told that he said something about since the Mass has begun, we are already in a reverent setting and further bows, etc. are unnecessary. Should I continue doing whatever it is that is normally proper to do? Thanks a lot. Like I said, I can hardly wrap my head around the GIRM and other documents when I try to find the answers I'm looking for.
Theoketos
This is a rather old question, so I hope it was resolved. Me personally, I would do my best to follow the instructions of my priest. That being said I do believe that it is the rubric to bow to the altar (and not genuflect to the tabernacle once Mass has begun). Here is a good post by Father Z http://wdtprs.com/blog/2011/11/quaeritur-bowing-to-the-altar-instead-of-genuflecting-during-mass-fr-z-rants/
