JimR-OCDS
Our parish has a crying room at the back of the church. Its a real small church, so the parent can still see and hear Mass. Anyway, one Sunday, a child, was crying while the pastor was trying to give his homily. The louder he spoke, the louder the child cried and carried on. Finally, the pastor, realizing the mother wasn't charitable enough to do what was appropriate, just stopped and looked at her and gently said, "I'm not going to win this battle." The mother got the hint and took the child back to the crying room. Jim
Slappo
i don't agree with what this priest did. parents should take the children out if they are noisy, of course, but they shouldn't be singled out and the priest shouldn't interrupt the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to tell them to leave. I was under the impression that nothing could disturb the priest from celebrating Holy Mass, not even people fainting in Mass, or if someone were to die in the congregation from a heart attack. From what I understand, the Mass must go on...(of course, the laity would take care of the emergencies...) so something as insignificant as this shouldn't have merited such an interruption from the priest. this priest obviously just let his nerves get the best of him... i have seen this happen a few times, and it wasn't pretty. Some priests can get really ugly towards noisy families, and it just doesn't promote the alter Christus image priests possess (especially during the Mass.)
I think for emergencies the mass is permitted to stop. Priest's have stopped mass before when a Eucharistic Miracle occurred, or so I've heard. I haven't ever read anywhere that the mass cannot be stopped for emergencies though.
CatholicCid
I believe that once the Consecration has started, it cannot be stopped. I've even heard it put that if the Priest were to drop dead, another Priest is to be called in immediately to finish the Sacrifice. Before or after, however, it could be paused in say an emergency. We actually had a fire alarm go off during Mass at the consecration. It was quite loud and annoying. After lowering the Host, the Priest glanced up and realized everyone was still kneeling. He just continued on with the consecration. In another instance, I believe we had someone pass out during a homily. The paramedics came and took the woman away. If I recall correctly, the Priest led us in a prayer for her and then we continued after the paramedics left. Winchester
Seriously: The priest had to make a call and it was probably the right one. If someone gets his feelings hurt, too bad. Like Paul used to say: Get over it, Nancy.

Ash Wednesday
When I was living in east London, there were some kids spazzing and horsing around in the front pew during mass. The priest stopped and scolded them out loud, right then and there. Trust me, they deserved it. So did their parents.

After the crying subsided, the priest said, "I love to hear crying babies at Mass, because it stings the conscience of those contracepting couples who selfishly refuse to have children." ~Sternhauser
Awesome. CatherineM
I'd rather be next to a crying baby than someone who ate a bunch of Ukrainian garlic sausage for breakfast. Better a snorter than a farter.
