what exactly is brimstone?
Brimstone is the English translation of the Greek word "θείου," the root meaning of which is "divinity."

First we must keep in mind that after the first judgement we will all be reunited with our bodies. One could, but does not have to, think that just as there will be a spiritual suffering in hell due to separation from God, that there will also be a suffering reserved for the flesh as well due to it's corruption, which is more than likely by fire.

The bible was written by humans, humans who would regard eternal fire as pretty horrible. I don't see why we project our own concepts onto God. The same goes for the idea of a hierarchy of angels in heaven.

Humans writing about what Jesus said. Jesus said it, not them. He was the one that gave them the idea of eternal fire, not them putting words in His mouth, hence the quote marks.

How can our souls, which are immaterial and lack any of the five senses, feel physical pain?

I think one ought to believe that there will be physical suffering in hell.

Matthew 10:28 "And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell."

"Destroying the body" sounds like a pretty unpleasant process.

Me too T-bone.

I still want someone to answer my question about immaterial souls feeling physical pain

I'm refusing to tell because it makes me feel powerful and worthy of living. Forgive me.

Before anyone can answer that, who said that immaterial souls feel physical pain?

Anyone know what the Greek word in the New Testament which Jesus used, which is translated as 'burn'? Jesus spoke in Aramaic, of course, but all we have is the Greek. The meanings of the word itself might clarify.

What is the point of believing in physical hell fire (that it's more than a metaphor) if the souls in Hell cannot feel it?

The fact that souls may not be able to feel physical hell fire does not mean that the physical hell fire does not burn (but not consume) the bodies of the resurrected. Also, the souls may experience a non-physical pain by perceiving the presence of physical fire and knowing that one day, the physical fire will inflict physical pain on their bodies. Even angels and demons can perceive (and manipulate) physical things.

Well first off, souls in hell are reunited with their bodies at the resurrection of the dead just as the saints will be too. Then they are damned eternally to the abyss with their bodies, so their will be some sort of physical pain along with the spiritual pain.
