Where do you get the idea that firearms secure liberty from the possible despotism of the government?

Go nose to nose with an LCP in Kevlar and a 50. mounted on a striker with your 30/30 Winchester and see who wins.

Many on the right scream bloody murder whenever the defense budget is cut and yet act as though individuals being allowed to own as many shotguns as they wish without a background check is going to enable them to fend of federal forces should the feds ever become tyrannical. If you want "Joe Six Pack" with a shot gun to be the check on government despotism you'd better cut that multi, multi billions dollar budget for developing advanced weaponry technology and that massive large professional military. Shot guns don't work against predator drones and Joe is going to need to drop about 70 pounds, master small unit tactics and learn to drop a man at 250 years if he's going to take on that federal agency under the department of the Navy known as the USMC.

Whatever man, I've played enough Call of Duty to know how to single handedly take out a tank or even bring down the entire third reich :) Just need a few save points in case I make a wrong move now and then. Oh and health that regenerates on its own too...

13. The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians ignore the others.

I've thought about this quite a bit recently. Jefferson is said to have favored frequent revolutions to keep politicians on their toes, the spirit of which is alluded to by the above platitude. However, modern military technology is such that I question the successful ability of the people to overthrow a hypothetical despotic government. The people would semi-automatic rifles at best, and perhaps improvised explosives. But, the modern American military features things like fighter jets and tanks. Therefore, I view a modern despotic American government as only quashable by a military junta. Which doesn't sound too much better ...

2. Those who trade liberty for security have neither. ~John Adams

3. Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.

4. An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.

5. Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.

6. Gun control is not about guns; it's about control.

7. You only have the rights you are willing to fight for.

8. Know guns, know peace, know safety. No guns, no peace, no safety.

9. You don't shoot to kill; you shoot to stay alive

10. Assault is a behavior, not a device.

11. 64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.

12. The United States Constitution (c) 1791. All Rights Reserved.

13. The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians ignore the others.

14. What part of 'shall not be infringed' do you NOT understand?

15. Guns have only two enemies; rust and politicians.

16. When you remove the people's right to bear arms, you create slaves.

17. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.

Okay.
How about:
Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
Never point your weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot.
Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.

I have no second amendment. It's not easy to own guns in Canada.
Especially non-hunting guns.

Im a supporter of the second amedment... But I dont believe civilians should be able to own automatic rifles. Im okay with .9 millimeters, and other handguns!

I'm tempted to give you a negative point for trying to correct me and it's actually
"never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy"
AKA Keep muzzle awareness.

The right of self-defense with the best means in existence is not granted by any other man or group of men. Nor is this right dependent upon the presence or absence of words on a piece of parchment. The right to self-defense with the best means in existence is a right that comes from God our Creator, who gave man his life and the technological skill to be able to create tools to defend it.

I am in favor of anyone owning any weapon he so chooses, so long as it is ordered toward and used for defense. I would not use violence to stop a non-violent person from possessing something because he might harm someone with it. We might as well incarcerate all men as potential rapists. The acceptable weapons, of course, would necessarily include M249 SAWs, M240Gs, SMAWs, mortars, claymores, cupcakes, toepoppers, and M1A2 Abrams, if the person is lucky enough to be able to afford them. If someone can show me an example of how virulent biological weapons or 1 megaton nuclear weapons could used in legitimate, moral defense of oneself or one's homeland, I might consider being in favor of those, as well. But even if individuals were able to own such weapons, I am completely against any agent of the State possessing them. It is not individuals acting with their own legitimately-earned income and with their own voluntarily-acquired manpower that resulted in the deaths of 200,000,000 people in the 20th Century. It was the State.

It's not about hunting. The right shall not be infringed, which means restricting ownership to hunting weapons is unconstitutional. You realize, Texan that our revolution was about the private ownership of a cannon. That's artillery.
