Maggyie
How is Evelyn Waugh's name supposed to be pronounced? I had a (female) great aunt Ev-ah-lyn but I thought I heard most men with the name pronounced it Eee-va-lyn. And Waugh? Is it WOW or Wawg? Or "Wah" as in Washington or "Wah" as in Wall Street? Thank you.

puellapaschalis
I've always pronounced it "Ev-lyn Warh". But I speak English with a British accent, ymmv.

Maggyie
Thanks for replies, now I can be less awkward when discussing literary topics... it's hard to be an effective book snob when you don't know how to pronounce the author's name! Maggyie
Evelyn Waugh!!! Writer of such Catholic classics as Brideshead Revisited! Master satirist at whose altar I worship... okay maybe not worship but he was awesome! His personality was lousy but was so, so funny... Maggyie
I believe 'twas orignally a boy's name before being co-opted by the girls... rather like Ashley... I too have been sucked into the paradise of non-fiction but Brideshead is an oldie but goodie! Never ever watch the movie they made out of it in 2008, they butchered it and made the Church into the villain, the 80s miniseries with Jeremy Irons was better though. zunshynn
He also wrote Helena, which is a very good novel... his favorite of his own novels. It was the only one he read to his family.
Evelyn is a boy's name? I've never read Brideshead Revisited and I know nothing about it. I'm more of a non-fiction kinda guy...
It's kind of funny though, he married a woman who was also named Evelyn, but she had an affair and they got divorced (and I believe annulled, eventually). For some reason I want to say the man she had an affair with was also named Evelyn, but don't quote me on that. I'm pretty sure its ehv-uh-linn waah, but with a British accent there will be a faint r at the end. Edited September 5, 2009 by zunshynn
