Paladin D
question to all you guys.... do tights/stocking/fishnets make any difference for the worse or better to the way you feel about girls? God bless
Tights and stockings don't bother me much, but what are fishnets? The things you see women cover their chest with on a Sports Illustrated magazine? If so... well... they tempt me. CatholicCrusader
Okay, I would never, NEVER argue with the Church, but I'm wondering if the same rules you posted still apply. Someone else had said that the Pope stated that swimsuits were fine in their appropriate time, swimming, but you said swimming should never be done in public. (Does that mean you can only swim in a pool you own?) Also, does the Church really say that women should always dress in head-to-toe dresses? I mean, if Christ came now, instead of 2,000 years ago, do you think His Mother would be dressed the same way Mary did 2,000 years ago? Like I said, I don't question the Church, but do these things really apply now?
The Church is infallible in Faith and morals. This deals with morals. It was declaratively stated. Therefore, it is infallible. Something that is infallible cannot be "overturned" (e.g. the Eucharist isn't true today and then a symbol tomorrow). Further, since no Pope has overturned this, it is still in affect, even if you think it's not infallible (which it clearly is). Also, the Pope who said that swimsuits are OK (which I don't think happened, if so, whoever said that, I would like to see where), then he was talking about probably privately (the person paraphrasing him says "in their appropriate time"--going by what the previous Church teaching is, then it is clear this is only in private, if at all). You can swim in your own pool, a private pool (as long as it's not co-ed) or a friend's pool. As long as you are not in co-ed company, you are usually OK, as long as you know the others are not gay or something. You should still, though, wear as modest of a bathing suit as possible (of course, a one-piece, maybe one of the old ones that had a little skirt at the bottom). The Church does say what that website quoted. Under the Pope, the Church stated the rules: 2 fingers breadth for the neck, at least to the elbow, more than "scarely past" the knee IN ALL POSITIONS, and, of course, nothing transparent or tight, for that would defeat the purpose. Also, partially-peach-colored shirts that look like a V-neck or whatever else would not be permitted, for they seem to look like skin from a distance, which is scandalous. Further, this is a VERY little sacrifice compared to what Our Lord suffered--giving up swimming (in public, or at all) as well as wearing modest clothes. That is not difficult. Following the rules of the Church on modesty is worth it much more than following the world and sin, which only lead to damnation. Why would you want to show off your body anyway? Or why would you want to case another to sin? Why would you want to be considered immodest for not wearing what the Church teaches? To me, it is clear that wearing a dress/skirt of appropriate length (about half way from knee to ankle, minimum--St. Padre Pio said at least 8 inches below the knee) is not much of a sacrifice. Yes, I am sure Our Lady would be just as modest now as She was then (She continues to appear in her apparitions in the same types of clothes as She wore in Her lifetime). I cannot imagine Her not wearing what She is always portrayed to be wearing (and should always be portrayed with a veiled head). Our Lady may not have a "toga" on if She were to have lived today, but her modesty would be the same level (just as you can follow these standards today). In fact, the Church does not require the modesty level of Our Lady. Our Lady would never have a neckline lower than the pit of Her throat, never a dress not to her feet, never sleaves not to her wrists. However, the Church allows for more laxity among Her Faithful. God bless you, and continue to seek modesty and chastity in all things.
CreepyCrawler
Is sloppiness really bad? I try to dress like a slob because I figure guys wouldn't be attracted to that. I have a lot of Muslim friends and I think that their modesty is so much more beautiful than some other girls who show everything. I would buy more modest clothing but I can't afford it right now so I just layer and I really do look like a slob most days. Also, someone mentioned that in Puerto Rico it's hot and so people wear fewer clothes. But in the Middle East people cover themselves head to toe in order to protect themselves from the sun and heat -- you can cover yourself and stay cool in the summertime (or just stay indoors w/ the AC on). Iacobus
I dress in pants and such when going to Mass, but when I am home I wear my normal shorts and t shirts. We can't run the A/C all the time (money and care for the Creation of God). So I dress modesty (shirt 99.9% of the time and shorts to the knees at least). Nothing about what I wear would provoke sexaul feelings in a person. I swim in public pools (co-ed) and wear my trunks. The only time I don't wear them is when I dive and than I wear a TIGHT wet suit (which STILL is hard to turn someone on with I mean 3mm of Neoprane over a body is not good looking). I dress with the intent of function and use not appeal. If you don't look at cloths thinking what will Katie think of this outfit or what will Nick think of this but what can I use this for and does it keep me warm or cool depending on the season, than modesty shaln't be an issue. VeraMaria
Bad thing about living in Miami....its so hot here... I choose clothes to suit the weather and based on if they're comfortable. Unfortunately that won;t work anymore as it did when i was younger. Gotta be so careful now with how I dress...and its really annoying because to find Modest clothing in Miami is Mission Impossible.

qfnol31
The thing about fishnets is they can tempt me to look at a girl more than once...which can be bad...that's about the only thing I'd have against them.

Piccoli Fiori JMJ
+JMJ+ Hello! Along this whole modesty thing, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and they should be treated with the utmost respect always, which includes modest dress. Also, what ever we expose of ourselfves we shamefully "expose" (not in a good way, like exposing the Eucharist) and humiliate God all over again, like when they stripped Jesus of His garments. My friends all have an issue with modesty... they don't get it, no matter what we tell them. A friend of mine, who dresses rather immodestly, made a joke about a Dioseian Camp for Jr. Highers where we are counselors, saying that she would have to go buy a whole new wardrobe, because hers didn't comply with the modesty rule. She was laughing, and I was just standing there letting all this anger build up in me... At my church we have a little booklette on Modesty and there were all types of Saints associated with Modesty... Including St. Faustina (If you ever read her Diary "Divine Mercy in my Soul" you will understand why she is associated with it, even though it is only one small paragraph out of some 500 odd pages). To me Modesty is a big thing. If I don't wear enough, I feel VERY exposed, almost naked. My mom makes me wear some of the things though... it's a real bummer. This summer I don't know what I'm going to do... I might go with my "hippie" skirts and pants, that is if I can't find any shorts long enough (I can never find modest shorts in the department stores). Modesty and I get along fine. I like wearing high necked things too. But that is enough babbling for me! God Bless! Yours in the Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, FutureNunJMJ
