Wait, did you type that correctly? I haven't seen the episode (granted I don't watch House MD religiously as some do) but that coming from House just doesn't sound right. From what I've seen of his character on the show, he would seem to espouse the belief that to live in misery would be slightly worse than to die in it.
nope, he definitely said it "smells of elderberries slightly less to live in misery than to die in it". he was talking about suicide. picchick
I voted to live. Even after going to confession, making amends, repenting a million times, I will still regret and have disdain for the terrible things that I have done. So when I die, I will no longer have those feelings.

Nihil Obstat
House often takes you by surprise with what he says, but I believe I do remember him saying that it's worse to die. It's consistent with his character.
iheartjp2
Wait, are elderberries those black ones that grow virtually everywhere and stink really bad? Yeah, if they're those, they're weeds and I take back what I said.

Fidei Defensor
Live. You have no real way of knowing what will happen when you die, no matter how certain you are. When you live with feelings of regret, you know it's going to be bad.

When you die you don't carry the guilt that one might carry even if they repented and made amends.
I had earlier been looking at this question in only one way, but if you read through all my posts I had a couple different ideas too. #1: what about the people that are going to feel somewhat responsible for your dumb choice? Say, like in the example above, you jumped off a diving board knowing you couldn't handle it, because your friends convinced you? They're going to carry that guilt if you die. Albeit he was intoxicated while he did this, it isn't really the point).
Nihil Obstat
I'm sure they would, but somewhat less than if he had died. Just that dying would make it that much worse.
I read through the whole thread before. I was just addressing your one post. I didn't see the question this way. I considered it more personal but I could see what you are saying. I guess it would then depend on the situation. It was more of a horrible thing you did, I thought, rather than something dumb that people made you do. I kinda looked at the question like, I committed a horrible irreversible mortal sin, like murdering someone.
