Having Kids Before Buying A House

Did any of you parents start your family before being able to save up for a down payment on a house? Just wondering. :idontknow:

Micah and I started a family first, and my siblings were the same way. My parents purchased a home before my brother was born, but they already had my eldest brother and my sister. Most couples I know have children before they purchase a home, mostly because they're younger couples and haven't yet decided where they want to permanently settle. Currently we have student loans as a factor as well.

Yup. We bought it a couple months before our first was born.

We were the other way, but my husband owned his house before we got married. Both our parents had children before buying a house, and that's true for most people we know as well.

My parents had 3 (maybe 4) before buying their first house.

My best friend and her fiance bought their house almost a year before they're going to get married, a few months after they got engaged. He lives there with a roommate until they get married. It just worked out because prices are so good right now.

They're pretty sure they will be staying here though, for some time, because of his job.

Selling a few (of your own! Selling other people's children is stealing!) children will make for a nice down payment. Always get the money beforehand if dealing with gypsies, though.

I think it depends on your situation when you're married. My wife and I had been out of school for a number of years before we got married, so after 4 months we're in the buying process between the offer and closing on the house. She's not pregnant, so we'll definitely be in a house before we have kids. We're aided, of course, by the housing market these days and the stimulus package.

However, people who've married just out of college are often not yet financially able to buy a house, but they don't want to wait five years before having kids. It will make more sense for them to have a kiddo or two before being at the point of buying a house.

I think it's much easier to gather a down payment and closing costs (think minimum of $7k) if you're not with little ones.
