Ever Virginity Of Mary

most biblical scholars will testify that Jesus had brothers. The Jeruselem Church was started by Peter and James (Jesus' brother), so they say.

Also, that in the passion accounts of the women at the foot of the cross, only in the Gospel of John is Mary named as Mary, Mother of Jesus. The other Gospels refer to her as follows:

Matthew 27:56
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.

Mark 15:40
Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
(Whole Chapter: Mark 15 In context: Mark 15:39-41)

Mark 15:47
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
(Whole Chapter: Mark 15 In context: Mark 15:46-48)

Mark 16:1
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body.
(Whole Chapter: Mark 16 In context: Mark 16:1-2)

Luke 24:10
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
(Whole Chapter: Luke 24 In context: Luke 24:9-11)

itt seems to me that Mary was indeed at the foot of the cross, however she is described in the other Gospels as Mother of james, joses (also translated as joseph), and even salome. are these all different women?

also. check this scripture:

Matthew 13:55
"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

i know cats say that the greek word actually means "cousin", if this is true why didn't they translate it "cousin"? I mean, Luke describes John as Jesus' cousin? what up wit dat?

holla back at me phamily.

also, i want to note that even if Mary had other kids with Joseph, that DOES NOT mean she is any less blessed. She is truly dope, even if she had sex. sex aint no sin in marriage.

Brother Adam

In Hebrew culture of Jesus' day his cousins get the legal status of siblings since he has no other siblings.

Explain why Mary was surprised and said "How can this be?" when the angel told her she would have a child if she was going to have relations with Joseph? If she was going to have relations with Joseph there would have been no surprise, Mary would have known exactly how she would have a child. Instaed she is bewildered at the statement "You will have a child" and has to ask how.

Joseph was given to Mary to protect Mary. Remember Solomon had hundreds of wives- and it was okay by God. Marriage in the OT works different than marriage in the New Covenant.

Also,

When Jesus was on the cross, he said to Mary of the apostle John, "Woman behold your son," and then to John "Behold your mother." Why would he have said this if Mary had other children to take care of her?

Exactly. It would have been a serious insult to both his mom and his brothers for him to do this.

Also, it was forbidden in Jewish law for a woman to have babies from two different men. A man could have babies with two different women if he divorced and remarried, but a woman was bound. So, when Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, who then was fit to break the law, and what child was worthy to gestate in the womb in which Jesus did?
Hey- do you have a biblical or other reference for that one? That's really interesting.
I heard it at a conference with Rosalind Moss (a Jewish convert on EWTN). I had read it once before and I believe the source is not the bible, but the Talmud. I'll try to dig it up for you, but try a google search with the terms, "rabbinical perpetual virginity," or "talmud perpetual virginity."

I think I found the page on Dave Armstrong's apologetic site. A mammoth of info!
