theculturewarrior
I invite evangelical and charismatic protestants to tell me what is meant when I am asked, "do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?" The analogy I have heard is that I know who the president is, but I haven't become personally familiar with him. I haven't invited him to my house. While I believe this sinner's prayer theology is effecacious, if incomplete, I often wonder at the wording used. What about satan who had seen God face to face? Who literally talked to him and had beheld his presence? How much more personal can you get than that? How can I not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as we are both persons, and we are in a state of relation to one another (i.e. a relationship). Where is this in the Bible? How old is this theology? Is it enough to have a just a personal relationship with God, and is prayer the only sacrament you need?
