I Swear Too Much

Phazzan

Recommended Posts

I tend to swear a lot. I swear when I'm driving, I swear when I'm angry, I pretty much swear throughout the entire day, if not out aloud I swear in my thoughts. Oh, and we're not talking about words like 'hell' and 'carp', we're talking about the offensive ones. I in no way condone such behaviour, as it is dirty, unecessary and unCatholic like, and I am ashamed of it. I wasn't raised Christian but even though I wasn't raised to swear I picked it up somewhere in Primary School, and I haven't stopped since. I pray to God telling Him I'm going to try to stop swearing, but it's hard not to, especially when you come across it everyday.

How do I stop?

Try biting your tongue?
Try saying a prayer for the idiot driver who cut you off, instead of cursing him?

Hi, Phazzan. Letting the occasional swear slip every now and then probably isn't much to worry about, but when it's a byproduct of not being able to control your anger, then it's more serious. Instead of trying to cut out your swearing completely, try to control your anger. Take some deep breaths and praise God that you're alive and that your worries are so simple that someone's driving upsets you. :)

I used to have this same exact problem. I had to learn to control my anger and road rage, and then after I was able to do that, I had to kick the habit of casual swearing. That's something you just have to start to be conscious of and when you swear, correct yourself. Try to take notice that you're going to do it before you do, so that you can stop it before it happens. Now I am virtually swear-free (though if I do get REALLY mad, one might slip out, but nothing like it used to). I am glad I am too, especially being a female. Now when I hear a girl swear (I mean the BIG word(s), it frankly grosses me out.

Also, be aware of your company. More times than I can count, I have seen people swearing in public, totally unaware (or just not caring) that there were kids around. One time, my Dad and I were on a trip and eating at Bob Evans. There was one guy by himself at a table, talking really loudly on a cell phone, and every other word out of his mouth was the F word. Everyone kept looking at him, and finally my Dad complained to the manager.

The Bible teaches us not to be coarse and crude, and in your situation, you probably are! But don't worry. With God's help, you CAN stop. I'll be praying for you! God bless. :)

If they apologise I forgive them. If they don't, well, I find it hard to pray for someone who puts their own needs ahead of other people's safety.

You have a good start on it because you recognize that you are doing it and that it is sinful, especially if you take the Lord's name in veign. But, just knowing that you are doing it doesn't mean you will stop.

I find myself doing it a lot when I am angry...so I have been praying for more patience. I still pray for Got to help me stop the swearing as well.

The only advice I can give to you is to be more aware of what you are saying before you say it. Be patient...don't let your mouth run amuck when you are angry.
