What Is Your Favorite Hymn?

During the summer I like to take long walks around campus (we have a very beautiful campus, very conducive to prayer) and sing as I walk. Now, I have a horrible voice, so I have to make sure no one's around to hear me. ;-) I generally sing Marian hymns (I'm on Mary's Mountain, after all).

Anywho, none of that really has to do with my question... What are all y'all's favorite hymns?

I really love "O God Beyond All Praising", "Humbly We Adore Thee", "Immaculate Mary", "Salve Regina", "God We Praise You", "At the Name of Jesus"... There are a lot more, that I can't think of right now.

What about you?

Hmm... My absolute favorite is "Glory Be to Jesus"... both of the versions OLAM sings. Of the real traditional "hymn-type" songs, I really like "Be Thou My Vision" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic"... I liked how we sang it, anyway.

I was notoriously obsessed with "To Jesus Christ Our Sovereign King" and I've always been fond of "The King of Love." That was the first "hymn" I think I ever remember hearing. And I love "At the Name of Jesus."

There's a hymn on the EWTN show parable, at the very beginning that I like alot, but I can't remember what its called.

There's a couple others, but they're not coming to mind right now.

My favorite version of "Ave Maria" is Franz Biebl.

Technically that's not a hymn, the Ave.

My a recent discovery has become a favourite of mine:

O Blest Creator of the Light
(Lucis Creator optime)

How Can I Keep From Singing?
Be Not Afraid

Salve Regina (the new-fangled one)
Like A Shepherd
I Am the Bread of Life

Those are on my top several list...there are many more that I like too.

Traditional:

* Holy God We Praise Thy Name
* The Church's One Foundation
* Soul of My Savior
* Holy Holy Holy
* Lift High the Cross

Modern (if you can call 1960s-70s modern):

* O Bless the Lord
* Christ Be Our Light
* Supper of the Lord
* Gift of Finest Wheat
* We Shall Rise

Latin:

* BIEBL'S AVE MARIA!!!
* Tantum Ergo
* O Magnum Mysterium (Victoria)
* Laudate Dominum
* Lauda Sion Salvatorem

...And I'm a real sucker for O Come All Ye Faithful and We Three Kings.

O Salutaris Hostia
Te Deum Laudamis (sp.?)
Ave Maria
Pie Jesu (a lady at my Church sung this with another choir member; I had tears in my eyes)
Panis Angelicus

As you can tell, I am a sucker for Latin hymns, but I have English favorites as well:

Let It Rain (not really a hymn, but it was sung at a retreat I went to during Adoration and I was crying)
Christ Be Our Light
Change Our Hearts (especially during Penance services)
Christ the Lord is Risen Today (I love this Easter song!)

:D

What's the occasion for O Magnum Mysterium? Is it for Christmas?

Since apparently Latin counts...

I also like...

Caligaverunt Oculi Mei
O Jesu Christe by Jaquet of Mantua
O Vos Omnes
Ave Verum by Bach
Ave Maria by Arcadelt
Sicut Cervus
Te Splendor
Adoramus Te Christe... can't remember which one...
Jesu Dulcis Memoria... the plain one
Veni Creator
Jesu Rex Admirablis
Adoremus in Aeternum #5

and I'm sure there are others...

I have a certain fondness of Signore Fa Di Me also...

Yeah, it's a Christmas hymn. :)

O great mystery
and wonderful sacrament
that animals could see the birth of the Lord
lying in a manger.
Blessed is the Virgin
whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!

Plus, the alto line kills me in wonderful ways. So. :love:
