Pio Nono
JMJ 3/31 - Fifth Wednesday of Lent the_rev, There are three things necessary for a valid confession. 1.) Matter - Sins are the matter of confession. These must be confessed to a priest within the forum of confession. 2.) Form - The words of absolution (I absolve you of your sins...) are the form of confession given to the penitent by the priest in the name of Christ Our Lord. 3.) Intention - The intention of the sinner to not sin again and the intention of the priest to forgive sins in the name of Christ Jesus. An examination of conscience is highly recommended, but not absolutely necessary. It's best not to make a habit of confessing without examination, but once or twice (or when really in a rush) doesn't hurt. I hope this helps.
