It's not a matter of being easier to follow or less rules. It's a matter of Truth.
Purists and Calvinists are pretty much extinct now, thank god. but another reason people turn t Protestantism is because it's a lot friendlier:
Catholicism: YOU WILL GO TO HELL FOREVEVER IF YOU ARE GAY OR GET A DIVORCE OR USE A CONDOM!
Protestantism: Uh...Sure you can do bad stuff. Just so long as you regret it. If you regret it you won't go to hell. :-)

That sort of stuff means that people who believe in god but like to use condoms or are gay or are likely to have a divorce become Protestant. Hope I cleared that up for ya

Haven't met a lot of Southern Baptists have you? ;) Some SBCs are Calvinist, some aren't. At the congregation in which I was raised, every week we were yelled at about how we were going to Hell for something or other (watching TV, the music we listened to, etc).

And just to clarify, it isn't divorce that is necessarily the problem, it's remarriage. :)

I disagree with the Catholic Church on A LOT of things, probably many of the same things as you do, but you don't really know a lot about the religion if that's what you think it's about (:

Also your post implies that condoms, homosexuality and divorce are bad. If that is the case then the Church is right for condemning them.

Puritans, maybe, but Calvinists are more or less descended from them and I can assure you that Calvinist thought is as strong as ever. Many (if not most) Southern Baptists and Presbyterians, not to mention non-affiliated Christian communities, follow some form of Calvinism. Go into the Christian section of a Barnes & Noble and a good number of the best-selling authors are Calvinist, though Rick Warren is one notable author who isn't.

Frankly, if a Christian truly believes in Sola Scriptura as the foundation of their faith and morals, I think Calvinism makes a lot of sense. During my own journey and internal debate about possibly becoming Catholic, Calvinism was the other reasonable option that I saw and the central question centered on whether to accept and believe in Sacred Tradition.

That sounds more like Fred Phelps and his family (who claim to be Baptist if i remember right) than the Catholic church.

yes we disprove of homosexuality and condom use, and prefer not to see a marriage end in divorce. but a necessary hell sentence?

Catholicism is not that direct and simple. Nobody knows who goes to hell except God. Nobody knows the state of someone's soul except God. There are certain things that are mortal sin, that when unrepented at the moment of death condemns someone to hell, but there are certain conditions that have to be met for something to be a mortal sin. Serious matter, full knowledge of the matter, and deliberate consent. People don't end up in hell by accident, they choose it and know better. We believers do trust and believe that God is a merciful God, however, much is expected of those that have full truth and understanding of the truth. Jesus never said the Gospel was a cakewalk, quite the contrary. But I don't think Christianity is meant to be exclusively a fear-based way of life -- there is much solace, joy and good fruits that come of the Gospel that make it more than just "avoiding hell." As far as who is friendlier -- I'd rather have a friend who isn't afraid to tell the truth, is honest and is looking out for you than one that sugarcoats things and tells you that "everything is fine" when it actually isn't. You may view that as fear-based condemnation, we view it as honesty and truth.

Sounds a lot more like Catholicism according to Bill Maher than Catholicism according to Pope Benedict.

Oh my goodness I love Fred Phelps. He's so hilarious. A comedy show in Australia decided it'd be a good idea to hit on them.

omg i actualy had to watch that twice just to make sure that i heard what was said correctly. i was tempted to watch it a third time but decided not to.

i grew up in the same town they call home so a small part of me was happy to see someone mess with them, and the fact that it was someone from another country just made it "better". probably because it comfermed it to me that its not just the local population or Americans that find them to be rediculous but that the view is shared by people all over the world.

they call themselves Christian yet i know atheist that live much more of a Christian life than they do.

Ash Wednesday

Someone asked one of Phelp's grandaughters where she thought she would go when she died, she kind of laughed and said "probably hell" and shrugged it off. The journalist asked her why that doesn't seem to bother her and she just said it was the great judgment of God.

I think their vision of heaven is a pretty empty place.
