It's not a matter of being easier to follow or less rules. It's a matter of Truth.
Purists and Calvinists are pretty much extinct now, thank god. but another reason people turn t Protestantism is because it's a lot friendlier: Catholicism: YOU WILL GO TO HELL FOREVEVER IF YOU ARE GAY OR GET A DIVORCE OR USE A CONDOM! Protestantism: Uh...Sure you can do bad stuff. Just so long as you regret it. If you regret it you won't go to hell. :-) That sort of stuff means that people who believe in god but like to use condoms or are gay or are likely to have a divorce become Protestant. At the congregation in which I was raised, every week we were yelled at about how we were going to Hell for something or other (watching TV, the music we listened to, etc). And just to clarify, it isn't divorce that is necessarily the problem, it's remarriage.

If that is the case then the Church is right for condemning them. Edited July 17, 2009 by OraProMe

Many (if not most) Southern Baptists and Presbyterians, not to mention non-affiliated Christian communities, follow some form of Calvinism. Go into the Christian section of a Barnes & Noble and a good number of the best-selling authors are Calvinist, though Rick Warren is one notable author who isn't. Frankly, if a Christian truly believes in Sola Scriptura as the foundation of their faith and morals, I think Calvinism makes a lot of sense. During my own journey and internal debate about possibly becoming Catholic, Calvinism was the other reasonable option that I saw and the central question centered on whether to accept and believe in Sacred Tradition. Ash Wednesday
Catholicism: YOU WILL GO TO HELL FOREVEVER IF YOU ARE GAY OR GET A DIVORCE OR USE A CONDOM!
Catholicism is not that direct and simple. Nobody knows who goes to hell except God. Nobody knows the state of someone's soul except God. There are certain things that are mortal sin, that when unrepented at the moment of death condemns someone to hell, but there are certain conditions that have to be met for something to be a mortal sin. Serious matter, full knowledge of the matter, and deliberate consent. People don't end up in hell by accident, they choose it and know better. We believers do trust and believe that God is a merciful God, however, much is expected of those that have full truth and understanding of the truth. Jesus never said the Gospel was a cakewalk, quite the contrary. But I don't think Christianity is meant to be exclusively a fear-based way of life -- there is much solace, joy and good fruits that come of the Gospel that make it more than just "avoiding hell." As far as who is friendlier -- I'd rather have a friend who isn't afraid to tell the truth, is honest and is looking out for you than one that sugarcoats things and tells you that "everything is fine" when it actually isn't. You may view that as fear-based condemnation, we view it as honesty and truth. Edited July 17, 2009 by Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday
Someone asked one of Phelp's grandaughters where she thought she would go when she died, she kind of laughed and said "probably hell" and shrugged it off. The journalist asked her why that doesn't seem to bother her and she just said it was the great judgment of God. I think their vision of heaven is a pretty empty place.
