QuoteMan
I created this post to talk about songs that relate to God in some way-or-another... I was mostly thinking of XTC's "Dear God" when I thought of this thread... Is is wrong to listen to a song that doubts, and "disses" God? lyrics: Dear god, Hope you got the letter, And I pray you can make it better down here. I dont mean a big reduction in the price of beer, But all the people that you made in your image, See them starving on their feet, cause they dont get enough to eat From god, I cant believe in you. Dear god, Sorry to disturb you, But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears, And all the people that you made in your image, See them fighting in the street, cause they cant make opinions meet, About god, I cant believe in you. Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make mankind after we made you? And the devil too! Dear god, Dont know if you noticed, But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book. Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look, And all the people that you made in your image, Still believing that junk is true. Well I know it aint and so do you, Dear god, I cant believe in, I dont believe in, I wont believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, No devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. Youre always letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you drown. Those lost at sea and never found, And its the same the whole world round. The hurt I see helps to compound, That the father, son and holy ghost, Is just somebodys unholy hoax, And if youre up there youll perceive, That my hearts here upon my sleeve. If theres one thing I dont believe in... Its you, Dear god. I hate the people who like death-metal, or songs that promote Satan...

loveletslive
why would you want to listen to such a song?

[/quote] You shouldn't hate people, period. I suppose it's alright to hate songs that promote Satan, but Jesus tells us to love our enemies and those who hate us. dominicansoul
i think we need to use our heads and common sense with these types of songs. What is the writer's intentions? Is it a serious look at the way we humans sometimes feel as if we are alone? When we go through those times in our lives where we feel God is nowhere near? (Dark Night of the Soul?) Or is it really just a song to criticize God, or perhaps religion in general? Jars of Clay's "Silence" comes to mind: Take Take till there's nothing Nothing to turn to Nothing when you get through Won't you break Scattered pieces of all I've been Bowing to all I've been Running to Where are you? Where are you? [verse] Did you leave me unbreakable? You leave me frozen? I've never felt so cold I thought you were silent And I thought you left me For the wreckage and the waste On an empty beach of faith Was it true? [chorus] Cuz I...I got a question I got a question Where are you? [verse] Scream Deeper I wanna scream I want you to hear me I want you to find me Cuz I...I want to believe But all I pray is wrong And all I claim is gone [chorus] And I...I got a question I got a question Where are you? Yeah....yeah And where...I...I got a question I got a question Where are you? Where are you? Where are you? Where are you? These words used to bother me, but then I realized the group was trying to portray the human condition at it's lowest, most suffering times...and how we might respond to God during those times... ...the band had lost several loved ones that year, and they really felt at their lowest both emotionally and spiritually... And then you have nine inch nails "terrible lie" in which I won't post the lyrics here. That song is nothing but an angry, blatantly blasphemous attack on the Almighty God. I believe music like that is very offensive to the Lord...
QuoteMan
*for XTC-Dear God, and USAirwaysIHS True I suppose... Hate does not make the world go 'round Can it still annoy me? Anyways, I know this song sounds bad; I think XTC is getting at, is that it's odd how God created all , and how he 'cares' for all creation, yet he let's things die, and seems like he doesn't care. I happen to like this song, it's good to listen to, even if it's a little blasphemous Edited June 30, 2009 by QuoteMan

Be the only being we are to hate is Satan and his devices.

Resurrexi
One member of the band said this about this song: "I kept getting these phone calls from home - tragedy after tragedy... If there is some kind of person in charge of this planet - are they sleeping? Smoking? Where are they? I just imagined running into God standing on a street corner like Bruce Springsteen, smoking a cigarette, and I'd have it out with him." That does not seem very reverent to me.
