Do You Think This Is Appropriate?

Today, at mass, in the intentions, we prayed for the repose of Michael Jackson's and Farah Fawcett's souls.
I have no problem praying for anyone's soul. However, we've never prayed for celebrities before, and while I guess I can see praying for FF, as she was Catholic (even that's a stretch - including her for that reason, not that she was Catholic), why MJ? We've never prayed for anyone of the sort. And, we didn't pray for Ed McMahon. If we're going to pray for everyone who dies, we should at least include everyone who has died.
And, I guess it just irks me, because while we pray for MJ and FF, not a word is said for the Unborn.

I don't know. What do you think?

I'd feel pretty weird about that. Maybe if he was someone that held office like the president, but a celebrity?

hmmmmmmm

I think the fact that he wasn't Catholic makes it all the worthy to pray for him. And he had a very troubled life. Also, it is very likely that this would make people listen since they know the name(s). I think it's a very nice touch, and that the first we should do when we hear that anyone dies it to beg Jesus to show them mercy and fill them with grace in their final hours. Please pray for Micheal. He would probably be in Heaven right now(he may be) if Christians said an Our Father or other 30 sec prayer on the news of his death. Have peace. I beseech it from God for others.

We pray for newly deceased members of the Royal House, and they're Calvinists. So... I guess it's something that has been on peoples' minds a lot, and therefore it's fitting to pray for Jackson as a community.

(Apart from that it's always good to pray for people, of course, but if we're going to pray for every deceased by name...)

and the part about FF's catholicity being a 'stretch', or MJ not being Catholic is, well, a foolish non sequitor; no disrespect. One could argue intercession [u]because[/u] of these reasons stated.

In the general intenions, we have prayed for all world leaders... I am assuming that included the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and others.... I doubt they are Catholics, let alone 'Catholics worthy of prayer' (which is the feeling I got when I read the OP's post)

In terms of 'never done that before': as long as it is within the rubrics of the Mass; this argument falls short as well.

Bottom line- you prayed for someone's soul; enemy or friend, we are commanded to do no less.

Our General Intercessions include a prayer "for all who have died, especially <parish members>" so I see no need to name celebs specifically.

At our Confirmation Mass last Thursday, one of the little girls asked me if we could include something about MJ. I told her no because the day was about her and the rest of the kiddos. But, she could and should pray for him and all others.

we should definitely pray for MJ's soul, especially if it is true that he converted to Islam.

oh, and our parish never prays for the unborn :(

I change my mind, I think this is okay. Aslong as the priest didn't break out into a rendition of Thriller then I can't see a problem with mentioning him in the prayers for the dead.

Actually I think in many parishes it could be very instructional if he did the part with the scary dude.

I think it probably had to do with how their deaths have impacted people. Sometimes prayers for the dead are more for the grieving than the deceased.

I think that the general intercessions in the OF should look like this:

Priest: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: Forpeace from on high, and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray to the Lord.

R: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For peace in the whole world, for the well-being of the holy Churches of God and for the union of all, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For this holy church and for all who enter it with faith, reverence and the fear of God, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For our holy ecumenical Pontiff [Name], the Pope of Rome, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For our most reverend archbishop and metropolitan, [Name], for our God loving Bishop, [Name], for the venerable priesthood, the diaconate in Christ, and all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy

Priest: For our civil authorities and all in the service of our country, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For this city, for every city, countryside, and for those living within them in faith, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For seasonable weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For seasonable weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: For the safety of those who travel by sea, air, and land, for the sick, the suffering, the captive and for their safety and salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: That we be delivered from all affliction, wrath, and need, let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, have mercy.

Priest: Protect us, save us, have mercy on us and preserve us, O God, by Your grace.

R. Lord, have mercy

Priest: Remembering our most holy, most pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Mother of God and ever-virgin Mary with all the Saints, let us commend ourselves and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God.

R. To You, O Lord.

Priest: For to You is due all glory and honor and worship, Father, son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever.

R. Amen.

The intentions reflect the needs and prayers of the Church at large and the community. We prayed for our new parochial vicar when he was ordained a priest, and for our old parochial vicar when he was re-assigned. :idontknow: Why not pray for the soul of someone who touched a lot of people, lived a tragic life and died suddenly?

I didn't say her being Catholic was a stretch - I said that could be a reason she was included, but that reasoning would be a stretch. She received extreme unction as far as I know, so I'd guess she was in good standing.

That's not what I meant. It's the praying for celebrities thing that made me stop and think a bit. We pray for world leaders too - looking around, we probably need that as much now as ever. I have no problem praying for non-Catholics. It's just...I don't know. Something about praying, by name, for celebrities who had (seemingly) very little impact on our parish, community, so forth seemed very out of the ordinary.

This is what I was getting at. We prayed for all who have died (more than once actually...found that odd, too), and mentioned those who had died from our parish, and then later, for whom the mass was being offered up.

Oh well, I wasn't saying it was a bad thing necessarily, just that I'd never seen anything like it before and wanted y'all's opinions.
