i had a question about the differences between a cloth and medal scapular.

i read this in the "do you wear a scapular" thread in open mic:
Early this century missionaries petitioned Rome to allow a Medal to be used instead of the cloth Scapular. Those who made this request were stationed in tropical regions and had considerable trouble preserving their Scapulars from decaying in the excessive humidity. After careful consideration, Pope Saint Pius X, in 1910, granted permission for the use of a Scapular Medal. It was to have an image of the Sacred Heart on one side and an image of Our Lady on the other and would possess the same promises and indulgences as the Brown Scapular. The Medal’s usage, however, was to be restricted. Saint Pius added explicitly to his consent that for ordinary circumstances, "I desire most vehemently that the cloth Scapulars be worn as heretofore."
does that mean that a medal scapular is "less effective" than a cloth one (the restricted part)?

forgive my ignorance, but what does a scapular do for you if you wear it?

thanks for your help!!!

Scapulars are wonderful! However they are not good luck charms that keep us out of Hell. I get this alot when it comes to the promises of the Brown Scapular. (Whoever dies wearing this scapular, will escape the fires of hell.) Some would take that and run with it, in immaturity. Wearing a scapular does not give us a license to sin with a guaranteed ticket into Heaven.

When one wears a scapular it is a prayer. It is also a committment to adhere to the life of holiness and the teachings of Christ's Church that are necesarry for salvation.

Therefore it does not matter if you wear a cloth or a medal scapular. What is more important is the disposition of your heart and committment that you make to our Lord when you decide to wear one.

I hope this helps.

Peace,

Fr. Pontifex
