Slavery existed long before the birth of the U.S. and U.S. can take credit for ending the practice. what do you say?
CatherineM
Slavery hasn't ended. 27 million people worldwide are currently in slavery. The US State Department just released their 2009 Trafficking in Persons Report. abercius24
I agree with both of you. Let's offer an apology for what part we have played in the worldwide scourge of slavery and allow that to be a catalyst in turning everyone's attention toward addressing the remaining problems that exist. Honestly, I support the U.S. government along these lines. Believe it or not, they are finally following the model set down by Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II. Much good can come from this. And CatherineM is right, even some Americans disappear every year and find themselves slaves in a foreign nation. It happens more often than you may think. add
Yes, it is true that in some parts of the world slavery still exist and is sanctioned by law. Women are considered property, like cattle, and human rights are still denied in other ways too, some places. After the civil war in the US, the fact is slavery was outlawed... Many good men and woman gave their lives to end this horrible sinful practice. they should be commended, if anything by congress. True, it (slavery) is not yet eradicated, but I do not see how the congress of the US saying “SORRY” does anyone a bit of good.

Resurrexi
You are very rude. The United States is the greatest nation on earth whose official religion is not Catholicism. That means that only Vatican City, Monaco, Malta, Liechtenstein, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Switzerland are greater nations than the United States. It is especially prevalent in Virginia and Florida. CatherineM
I does seem that the US is in the apology business these days. Canada and the Pope seem to be expected to apologize for everything under the sun too. Maybe England should apologize for beheading a few too many of my ancestors. dUSt
The U.S. government hasn't apologized for slavery before this? Well it's about time. Let's all pray for the day that the U.S. apologizes for abortion.
