Theologian in Training
Hello Paladin, The prayer of the Divine Office is merely one of the names attributed to the Liturgy of the Hours. Essentially, the Liturgy of the Hours consists of certain moments during the day in which we are called to sanctify the day. For example, there is Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer. There are also the "minor" offices, which are the Office of Readings and Daytime Prayer. Daytime Prayer, in particular, is broken up into three different times, "Midmorning, Midday, or Midafternoon." You pray the relevant time. Usually, Midmorning would be anything before 12:00 P.M. whereas, Midday, would be anything until about 3:00 P.M., and Midafternoon would be anything until about 5:00 P.M., since that is technically when the Evening hours begin. Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, however, are given pride of place in the Divine Office, because, as the Church teaches, they are the "hinges" upon which all the other hours rest. Further, the Office of Readings can be said at any hour of the day, and consists of a Scriptural reading and a reading from a Saint, the Vatican II documents, or one of the Fathers of the Church, typically.
