If you want cheap I would go with Toshiba, especially if you expect wear and tear (travel). I have had one for work for 3 years and love it. I think we paid $549 for it. We have a Dell at home that I'm not as happy with, but the price was right.

Just got around to asking my tame engineer. It's the fluorescent tubes used for backlighting the screens which have mercury.

Any laptop that has "LED backlighting" will not contain mercury.

You can still take any of them on to an airplane. :)

Probably not as hazardous as flying a metal shell filled with hundreds of people and 50,000 lbs of fuel through the sky at 500 miles per hour.
