Jake Huether
I was lucky enough to see the Passion for the fourth time last night. Although, there was a crying baby in the back of the audience (someone brought their child), the movie was still nonetheless just as powerful. But I caught an amazing detail that goes just about unnoticed... If you look at Christ's hands while He's on the Cross, you will see that his thum, pointer and middle fingure are extended; and his little fingure and ring fingure are curled up. In Catholic Iconography this symbolizes the Holy Trinity, and the two natures of Christ (God and Man). I'd bet my bottom dollar that Jim Caviezel did this on purpose. What else have you guys noted that is pretty inconspicuous??
L5
Wow! A baby crying? That makes it feel even more like being at mass! LOL

Rebirth flame
someone told me (and now i see it) that the table Christ made at the beginning of the movie was the one that the Roman soldier was sitting at during the scourging at the pillar. i thought that was freaky
Jake Huether
someone told me (and now i see it) that the table Christ made at the beginning of the movie was the one that the Roman soldier was sitting at during the scourging at the pillar. i thought that was freaky
Wow! I'll have to see that. This movie is so jam packed with detail. Actually, that was something I wanted to ask: What was the significance of the Table sequence? Was that in one of the St.s visions, or did Mel pull it out of a hat? What was the significance of Mary's "this will never catch on"? I know Mel had to have a reason for the details in that episode. I mean, if the point was to show Mary and Jesus together, it could have been just about anything... Why a "high" table? Rebirth flame
i've always understood that scene to be in there to show more of the humanity of both Jesus and His Blessed Mother. I think that Mel was shootin for something that would be able to show others that Mary and Christ were as human as anyone else (except of course, in sin). The "this will never catch on" line, i think, was more or less a joke cuz tables with chairs have caught on, again meant to illustrate their humanity. I don't know if that was the exact intention, but that's what i got from it. As for whether or not it was in a vision, i don't know. I have not read all of the Passion book, but i just started it the other day.
RedSnapper
I'm sure that the table sequence was Mel Gibson's use of his artistic license to show the humanity of Mary and Jesus.... Rebirth flame is right on there IMHO. I've seen the movie twice and hope to go again before it leaves the theatres. One thing I noticed is that the devil never blinks which is a great portrayal of his constant watchfulness and his not being human. I think that worm/maggot that was crawling out and in of Satan's nose was just a visual of the distortion of beauty.... that is, the devil appears attractive but upon closer inspection, one is disgusted and repelled at the reality of evil. RedSnapper
I had a look at the coffee table book of the movie, the one with the various photographs from the movie and I don't think that table that they showed Jesus building in the beginning of the film is the same one as the one that the Roman soldier was sitting at. That one was metal and wood and the one "Jesus" was building was all wood. Ah well... it was an interesting thought. AMDG RS
Rebirth flame
my bad, i think, actually, that it was the table with the scourging equipment on it. again, this is all word of mouth, as i haven't seen it, but my priest told me.
