Besides, they don't allow marriage for those who are already ordained. Was anyone familiar with him before he made the news? He is leaving because he wants to get what he wants, the woman and the pulpit. Vows and promises come second or at least open to renegotiation. jiyoung Posted May 28, 2009 Share Posted May 28, 2009 I don't think that he'd be likely to get that dispensation, considering his circumstances...he leaves to be with this woman, then tries to come back and be a Catholic priest again? It'd be pretty highly suspect. I agree that this priest really should be taking some sort of sabbatical, having time to pray and get counseling. If he is so torn as you say (I haven't really followed it so I haven't seen any interviews or anything), then he shouldn't be rashly making the decision on his own. If we (as Catholics) were seeing a man wanting to leave his wife because he started an affair with another woman, we wouldn't be saying "oh, we'll give you time to discern whether this really was your vocation"--my view is that even if it's not really your vocation, it is once you make that vow. I suppose there are exceptions, but it's very much like breaking up your own marriage and converting somewhere else that believes in divorce just so you can be with this new woman (or declaring yourself head of the Church in your country, a la Henry VIII).
