why doesn't he join the eastern-rite? i thought they allowed priests to marry?
The Eastern Rites shouldn't be regarded as a place for men who want it both ways. Besides, they don't allow marriage for those who are already ordained.

Was anyone familiar with him before he made the news? I guess you'd have to be more in the Hispanic Catholic community... when I saw a headline about "Father Oprah," I thought Oprah had some Episcopalian priest who was becoming Catholic ;)

It was a valid question :) I was just giving fair warning in this thread, because often threads like these have a tendency to go down the wrong path. :)

Sorry. I shouldn't have commented on the excommunication piece at all. I wasn't being a wise guy (or gal in my case).

It is not surprising. He is leaving because he wants to get what he wants, the woman and the pulpit. Vows and promises come second or at least open to renegotiation.

This is a rash assumption.

How so? Given his actions and what he has said publicly, it doesn't seem much of an assumption.

At a minimum he's excommunicating himself. I'm kind of shocked at the whole thing ... and considering how well known he is in the spanish-speaking community it is quite the scandal.

Because I watched an interview he gave and he seemed very distressed and torn emotionally. A person can fake their words but body language tends to tell the truth.

I had heard of him before and I think I heard him once or twice ... however others who watch spanish television more than I do are quite familiar with him.

Again its quite the scandal.

it's sad. he is torn and he shouldn't be making such decisions in the state he is in right now...

i wish he could have taken a sabbatical first, pull away from this woman, and seek proper counseling before he took this step....

I don't think that he'd be likely to get that dispensation, considering his circumstances...he leaves to be with this woman, then tries to come back and be a Catholic priest again? It'd be pretty highly suspect.

I agree that this priest really should be taking some sort of sabbatical, having time to pray and get counseling. If he is so torn as you say (I haven't really followed it so I haven't seen any interviews or anything), then he shouldn't be rashly making the decision on his own. If we (as Catholics) were seeing a man wanting to leave his wife because he started an affair with another woman, we wouldn't be saying "oh, we'll give you time to discern whether this really was your vocation"--my view is that even if it's not really your vocation, it is once you make that vow. I suppose there are exceptions, but it's very much like breaking up your own marriage and converting somewhere else that believes in divorce just so you can be with this new woman (or declaring yourself head of the Church in your country, a la Henry VIII).
