CNN) -- Father Alberto Cutie, an internationally known Catholic priest who admitted having a romantic affair and breaking his vow of celibacy, is joining the Episcopal Church to be with the woman he loves.

Cutie (pronounced koo-tee-AY) will pursue the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida said in a written statement.

It was not immediately clear how long the process would take.

Cutie is sometimes called "Father Oprah" because of the advice he's given in Spanish-language media.

He shocked the Catholic community when photographs of him embracing a bathing-suit-clad woman emerged this month.

Cutie admitted having a two-year relationship with the woman.

She has not been publicly identified.

"I thank God for the many people in our community who have shown me their love and support," Cutie said, according to the Episcopal diocese's statement. "With God's help, I hope to continue priestly ministry and service in my new spiritual home."

Why does he have to leave the Church? If he truly loves this woman and feels that the priesthood was not his calling after all, why not "resign" from the priesthood and remain a practicing Catholic?

They allow married men to be ordained, but do not allow an ordained man to marry, AFAIK.

I wish I knew, he is leaving the Eucharist, I wonder if he is not laicised is what he is doing grounds for excommunication?

Sad to see someone so promising end up like that. Looks like he isn't really sorry for his actions and sadly he is looking for a religion that he wants and not one started by Jesus.

What is eerie is that this song started playing when I clicked on this thread

If anything it's excommunication by choice.

Let's be careful with the speculations we make, and no this isn't pointed at anyone directly. I think prayers are sufficient enough.

I am saddened by this news.

Not in response to anyone directly, but the question was not one of judgment but rather of curiosity.
