Paddington
I remembered this interview from Jan 2005 on NPR. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4583007 About 7 minutes, he starts talking his personal political a tad. About 7:40, he says that he discovered how liberal he was on the Daily Show. About 27 minutes, he starts talking religion. - He was his daughter's catechist the previous year. - Interviewer says "I presume you disagree with the Church on birth control." He says "presume away." - Then he keeps on about Catholicism and American Catholicism. He is Catholic yet anti-authoritarian. - At 28:45 ish, he says "I don't believe that I can't disagree with my Church and I'll leave it at that." He could've mispoke on religion. I'll leave that alone now. Whether he mispoke or not on politics, or has since changed anything, why does he largely make fun of conservatives for immoral and ridiculous things while every tenth joke (maaaaybe one fifth) is about Obama spitting on the sidewalk? Whoever just says "he skewers everybody" is no-calling the proportions. I was going to keep talking and talking. I won't. I guess there is nothing wrong with him choosing to skewer conservatives more. It fits his character's character. Maybe he couldn't come up with anything successful if he tried to break out of that mold. But it truly is his mold. BTW, anybody see a problem between religion and political comedy as we know it? I would likely be wrong for saying disparaging things about a neighbor or co-worker. A normal comic disparages away in front of a big audience. Paddington
Bears rule! Anybody else gonna watch Colbert at 12-12:30? I gotta check up on him to see if I was right. (I was, but still.)

LouisvilleFan
Personally, I think Colbert is more faithful to the Church than he lets on. When he says "Presume away" in the NPR interview, I think it's pretty clear that the interviewer made a false presumption. It's difficult to hold up the last election as a litmus test because many pro-choice voters favored McCain/Palin for other political reasons like fiscal and monetary policy. Likewise, many pro-life voters favored Obama/Biden for what should be less important reasons. But Colbert apparently knows his stuff, especially when it comes to Catholicism. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. If nothing else, at least he asks good questions and refuses to fill the airwaves with vapid reality show junk. The only life we can choose to live is our own. What the real Stephen Colbert believes, that's what he's chosen. Frankly, I think he sets the bar pretty high for himself -- a bit too high -- if he can throw down some Nicene Creed and catechism without believing the whole spiel. I'm not sure if I've listened to this interview... seems I've read a transcript or article about it. I'll have to give it a listen over the weekend to catch how he says it. Of course, he won't let on too much... it's part of his character to leave things open enough that one could read into his words what they'd like to hear (maybe he missed his vocation as a cardinal), so I may be completely wrong in calling his bluff. mamalove
Did anyone else catch where he basically called pro-life people hypocrites if they were against birth control? It was around 13 min. He said "birth control prevents abortion" Edited May 29, 2009 by mamalove
