OraProMe
I saw on the tv that his new girlfriend is pregnant. I know he was a sedevacantist (well, possibly. He went to an indult Mass in Rome while directing passion of the christ), but he seemed to have a strong faith. It's so sad that a man who created the Passion of the Christ, publicly proclaimed he was a devout Catholic attending the TLM and founded a chapel has now fallen into such sin. I wonder what the members of his home chapel and his priest think. Sad news.

Don't quote me on this, but I suspect Gibson would probably justify it by saying his marriage to his protestant first wife was never valid, or something. There are plenty of pitfalls one can fall into when one essentially sets himself up as his own little pope. I still do admire his work on the Passion though. Brother Adam
It's like how the sacraments work ex opere operato. The Passion is a great film despite the lack of holiness of its producer.
Resurrexi
Actually, Mel Gibson is not a sedevacantist, he's a sedeimpeditist. Sedevacantism believes that the last five Popes were anti-Popes. Mel, on the other hand, believes that last five Popes were true and valid Popes, but they their "heresy" caused them to be unable to exercise their office. Your garden variety sedevacantist holds that the papal bull Cum Ex Officio (among other things) lead to John XXIII onwards falling from office. Sedeprivationists believe that modernist heresy prevents them from TAKING office. Either way, they don't hold office. Either way, they're not "true and valid popes". A sedeprivationist believes that Joseph Ratzinger has the potential to be a true pope, if he renounces his heresy. It's called the Cassiacum Thesis and was created by Guard Des Lauriers who was a dominican, illicitly consecrated a bishop by Arch. Thuc. Do you get what I mean? They're different theories that come to the same conclusion. To say that sedeprivationists hold that Benedict XVI is a "true and valid pope" is incorrect. For example, they wont pray for the pope during the Mass. Edited May 28, 2009 by OraProMe
KnightofChrist
I think of men like King David and Saul when I think of those like Gibson, who preach the word of God. But who do not always live by that Word.

And I actually still have a lot of respect for his father Hutton Gibson (incidently he was quite the Jeopardy champ). Mel's struggling with many things that he needs to work out, who doesn't? It's unfortunate that his personal problems are being publicized so much but that's the life the rich and famous. It's my personal opinion that we really shouldn't be discussing and/or analyzing anyone's personal failures, whether it be him or anyone else. There's plenty of other stuff to keep us busy talking about. A thread for Mr. Gibson in the prayer forum should've been sufficient. I do not know much about him but I have seen interviews given by him that are extraordinarily antisemitic. Edited May 28, 2009 by VoTeckam
