Huh? Then I'd miss part of the Mass. Besides, the priest is busy.

Unless you're talking about announcing one's sins before the entire congregation. I've heard the Orthodox do this, but I've not independently corroborated that.

I can see how doing it that way could be a deterrent to habitual sins. I could also see how it would be a deterrent to making a confession. The main problem I see with doing it out in the open is that we tend to get puffed up when we compare ourselves with others. "Well, at least I've never committed [i]that[/i] sin."

Ah, well, we do that anyway.

That, and how each parish has at least one person (or group) who think they are holier than everyone else. Gossip would be even more rampant.
