rachael
by reading difficult books, keeping things quiet, no music on, no tv, taking the bus instead of driving, taking long walks. I think stuff like that helped. Basically environmental things to help bring the mind back to itself, and back into equilibrium with the body and one's environment. I get the sense that Adhd is so common because of the way in which modern life is set up, the way our children are raised and schooled. Its mainly environmental I think.
actually a lot of people just simply grow out of it
kafka
I don't know. I had a really tough time back in high school because of it. Not like socially but mentally. It caused me to adopt some OCD and Schitzophrenic like tendencies and can cause me to have rather extreme insomnia (if anyone remembers by 96 hour no sleep marathon)
interesting. I was talking in generalities. You seem to have a more severe form of it. It wasnt severe in me. plus I think I misread the title here. I was thinking Attention Deficit Disorder, without the hyperactivity present.

mcts
my psych prof told us that hardly anybody actually has ADD or ADHD but a LOT of people have different things that would cause them to behave like they do have one of those.

Adrestia
actually a lot of people just simply grow out of it
or they learn to deal with it... and so appear to be less symptomatic. By definition, those with accurate diagnoses don't grow out of it. If the symptoms were caused by environmental factors, it wouldn't be true AD(H)D. CatherineM
With my youngest we finally figured out that his body just couldn't deal with sugar. He'd get these euphoric highs followed by homicidal lows. When he ate enough protein with the sugar, it balanced it out. I pretty much had him on zero sugar, but couldn't control what he did at school, or at someone else's house, so he had to learn to be responsible for his own health. We also had him playing baseball 12 months of the year, on two different teams. I found exhausting him to work pretty good too.
inunionwithrome
You just have to be careful that you don't over exhaust your kid too much either. Enough is good. I have ADD and I have not grown out of it. I have found that dietary changes work well. I also have a milk allergy so have to be careful anyways because of my intolerance for lactose. Some people grow out of that too. Some don't. mwah. However, their is this wonderful discovery of fish oil. I take norweigian cod liver oil actually. It takes like an orange dreamsicle now. It has helped my attention span so much. Anyone who boo hoos on omega 3-s which are wonderful for the brain is a big fat liar.
virginiancatholic
Many folks insisted that my brother had ADHD...but he was seriously just an active kid...who periodically bounced off the walls and threw himself down the stairs. Now that he is a teenager, he's learned self control and to focus...though he's still pretty bad at making prudent decisions where danger is concerned. Think he'll ever grow out of it? My cousin has bonafide ADHD, and has learned, through extensive practice and assistance from his parents to control himself so that he is drug free. He's had to do a lot with diet and self awareness, but because he's never been on drugs and stuff he has a functional career in the Navy.

The problem there is that he was one of 2 boys in his class and the other boy is very VERY easy to deal with as far as he isn't very active when he isn't supposed to be. My brother is just a typical 10 year old boy. We switched his schools and has had no problems.
Didacus
My oldest has it (14 years old). We tried everything a agonized for couple of years trying to figure out what was wrong with our son. We didn't want to resort to medications. It was a rough time on everyone in the family, specially my son of course (poor kid). One thing that an expert said, it that she was convinced that ADHD was always around, except in the old days, they were 'superstars' in a sense, because they would be the ones to get up first in the morning (couldn't sleep), work as ahrd as bulls all day long (couldn't exhaust them). But today, since a large part of work is mentally based for kids in school, this condition stands out more. I liek that thought. Its one of those things I repeated to my kid. That ADHD may be a aprticularity of his personaility, but in no way diminished his worth, and in some ways actually enhanced his skills and contributions (as long of course, that he could control and focus his energies, easier said than done).
