Guy-girl Question

Recommended Posts

I've mentioned my best friend before.

Anyway. We're just friends. The other night we were discussing cars and I was saying how a certian car was cute. Long story short without thinking I said, "Oh, yeah, I forget you're a guy."

Now this isn't something he's ever been particularly sensitive over. And in my other (completely plutonic) guy-girl group friendships we said this all the time with no hurt feelings. We said it going both ways..guys "forgetting" that I was a girl. Infact, in other circles outside of my college buddies, the verbal recognition of gender forgetfulness in the face of casual disagreement is fairly common place.

Anyway he sounded genuinly hurt so I told him all the things that made him guy-like and that seemed to satisfy him.

I never want to look too far into things but to me this was mighty strange. :detective: The only time I've ever taken ofence is when I've liked the guy.

Don't worry about it. The fact that you are so close as friends that you forget about things like that is cool really.

That said, I am a manly-man due and I think the new VW Beetle and the SmartCar are cute!

lol I was talking about the new VW beetle.

I'm not so much concerned I really hurt his feelings...just examining the plutonic-ness of the relationship.

I totally get what you were saying to him. It's not that you FORGOT he was a guy, but that your comment "this car is cute" is generally LOST on guys, something you realized only after you said it.

lol yes I knew what I meant :topsy:

Poor thing was hurt though. I had to talk him out of leaving empty pizza boxes around his apartment to "prove" he was a guy.

Where do they come up with theses things?

Well, here's how I figure it. Girls tend to over-analyze and read into EVERYTHING - particularly with a guy she likes. Just an example. Yes the movies exaggerate this but every girl can't deny it's happened to her at one point or another. Guys, however, take things more at face value rather than reading between the lines the way a girl does. That's how I've always understood it anyway. So he took your comment "Oh, I forget you're a guy!" at face value. If you look at it that way, it can seem offensive. "So what, I'm just like one of the girls to you?" But if he really thinks about it, he'll recognize [a] that your comment would have been lost on him, which is why you made the second remark and [b] it's a GOOD thing that you may "recognize" him alongside your girlfriends...this does NOT mean you see him as a girl, but that you're extremely comfortable around him.

But really how Smart is it when it comes into contact with a Semi, or a soda can?

So.. do you like him? Are you interested in him as more than a friend? It sounds like you already know that he likes you.
