IcePrincessKRS
Blech. My sister had to go through all that when she got married. Her husband is Irish (they met in college while he was over here on a student visa) so when she was planning the wedding she also had to hash through all the visa junk. CatherineM
There's a big advantage of immigrating to Canada over the US. A Canadian sponsoring a foreign spouse doesn't have to have any money. As long as you aren't on welfare, you don't have to have a dime. The foreign spouse doesn't have to prove they are healthy either, as long as they aren't oozing contagious fluids everywhere, they can immigrate even if they have TB or AIDS. An American sponsor has to have a certain level of income, or assets, and the foreign spouse/fiance has to be in better health. If you are the one immigrating, you have more protection in Canada. When I became a Permanent Resident, I could do anything a citizen does except vote and hold a high security job. I could have left my husband immediately, and not lost my legal status. In the US, you have to stay married for 3 years before you can have permanent status. Many foreign brides put up with years of abuse in the US in fear of being deported if they leave their abusers. [/quote] Basically a poor college student can sponsor a foreign wife for immigration to Canada, but can't to the U.S. Immigrants are better protected under Canadian law than they are under U.S. law. It is complicated. That's why immigration consultants here who just fill out the paperwork get paid $5000. I'm glad I could fill my own out by myself. Christie_M
Complicated I'm sure doesn't even cover it. What exactly does 'sponser' mean?
