yiannii
In the Opinion section of "The Age" (a Melbourne newspaper) there was an article in there which referred to Galileo. To cut a long story short this piece made the Church out to be wrong in its actions against Galileo and basically portrayed the Church in a negative light. What's the story with Galileo? Is it true that the Church condemned him because his beliefs were contrary to their beliefs? Is it true that he was held under house arrest until his death? Is it true that the Church was wrong? If anyone could help me U would much appreciate it. Even if you know of some internet sources I could read. I am wanting to write to the author of the piece in due time. Iacobus
The Church did punish him for his ideas. They put him under house arrest and banned his works. The idea at stake was the Helo-centric solar system. However, in the 1980's JPII we may have erred in our treatment of Galileo and formaly delcared him innconet in 1992. jessinoelw
My husband is taking a class on the history of science and technology and we were talking about Galileo last night. According to what he's learned, the crime Galileo committed was not in believing in heliocentrism, but in teaching it as fact. The Church gave him permission to teach his ideas as theory, but not as fact. There were allegedly a number of Church officials at the time who believed in heliocentrism. Galileo also made an imaginary conversation to illustrate his ideas in a book and took the words of the Pope and put them in the mouth of a character that was supposed to be the "simpleton" who believed that the earth was the center of the universe. --Jessica
Aloysius
also: wasn't it mainly scientists who called for his persecution? the Church really wasn't too concerned much about these things but ppl abuse the Church to get ppl they don't like out of their way. such is what i've heard is the case with Galileo. I hope I wasn't crampin your style bro. I feel kind of out of character giving the concise, resource laden post as opposed to my typical long-winded, scattered, tedious kind of posts. I'll present this information in one big paragraph with little or no spaces and with an excess of verbiage. I will also spend a long time building up before I actually make any significant points. I am sure you don't mind. Or maybe I should post an incredibly large and excessive article from some website to explain myself. j/k Peace.
Joseph
We are on this subject right now in my Religion and Science class. The book we are reading for this is The Galileo Affair by Maurice A. Finocchiaro in case anyone is really interested in the subject. It is full of letters and documents related to Galileo and his trial.
