cmotherofpirl
If you have ever read the stuff Luther wrote about the church right before he died you would never use the word saintly. Edited March 25, 2004 by cmotherofpirl

Bruce S
Martin had some things right, .... . Alcohol cures all evils Luther thoroughly approved even advocated drinking heavily. When a young man wrote to him complaining of despair at the prospect of going to hell, Luther wrote back advising him to go and get drunk. That, he said, was what he did when he felt despair. . Sex Luther also thoroughly approved of sex; he said that a woman had the right to take on a lover, if her husband wasn't able to satisfy her in bed - and the husband should look on this with equanimity. So, women, make Martin YOUR patron saint... Grin.

Bruce S
Indeed I do, but Martin had flesh too, he fought them to the point where his confessors rebelled against his mining them for tidbits, so I guess, after his release from bondage ... he remained in other bondage. It makes him real to me.
IcePrincessKRS
He's plenty real to me. I just don't think its a good idea to advocate sexual sins and drunkeness, even if it is only in jest. So behave!

Theoketos
funny fact: I heard that luther was constipated
When he had his "Tower Experience" he was relieved, um I mean God reveiled stuff to him. Theoketos
OK, so enough of that. I think I need to be more charitable even to dead confused theologians...
Laudate_Dominum
There are actually some things about Luther's writings that I like. He had some legitimate points even if he was too extreme in some areas and turned into a heretic. He was a smart guy too, if he hadn't gone off the deep end he might have been a really good theologian in the Church. And the Church officials could have handled things better when Luther was starting to get rowdy but wasn't yet a formal heretic. I'm not trying to justify anything, just pointing out that things could have been a lot different and he was not all bad. Peace.
