CatherineM
Wait? Huh? What movie? I gotta read more about this....
4 members of the crew from the show Leo and Me came down with early onset Parkinson's. There have been more than one cluster like that. There was a outbreak once when someone was passing toxic heroin. Now they think it is like schizophrenia, where there is a genetic pre-disposition, but then exposure to a virus or toxin triggers the illness. It's kind of silly to think you are going to find a cure when they aren't even sure yet exactly what causes it.

For years now people have been trying to tell us that Bush's policies were killing people like Christopher Reeve and Michael J. Fox. They have tried to make us believe that injecting stem cells would miraculously cure people. Which ever kind of stem cells you are talking about, the biggest advances are probably going to be in organ replacement first, and maybe nerve regeneration after that. More complicated diseases like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's are years and decades away. All the promises that the new messiah made are going to fall away. Closing Guantanamo immediately, leaving Iraq immediately, stuff like that has already fallen flat when pie in the sky has met reality.

Old_Joe
I think Oprah has been in the business long enough that she can mask being uncomfortable. Fidei Defensor
I thoroughly enjoy when we ostracize the majority opinion and welcome the minority opinion just because it fits with our beliefs. Science, unlike religion, tends to depend on the majority of trained minds assenting to a scientifically backed opinion.

This goes both ways. So science is better than religion? Entering a war between science and religion is ridiculous. I made a legitimate observation about the nature of science compared to religion. Religion doesn't welcome majority v.s. minority opinion. Science does. I think it's a little bit more understandable in his case, though. For one, much of his twitching is due to his condition. Secondly, he has a much stronger interest in finding a cure. Even if you are pretty sure research is not on the right path for a cure, it's still hard to hear. On the other hand, Oprah has no particular personal interest (that I know of) for using embryonic stem cells... merely political ones. And her fidgeting in her seat and messing with her hair, to me, shows she is really uncomfortable with his announcement. Maybe she was signalling for the producers to get the big hook.
