Piccoli Fiori JMJ
I wish intinction was used more often. And just the clergy. I always try to receive the Host from the priest or other ordained man, but sometimes it is unavoidable. I will almost always take from the Chalice unless there is an incredible wait-line or I would really mess things up. All though it is the Most Precious Blood, there's alcohol in it... so I never worry about catching germs and I have never gotten sick. I guess I'm not a germ-aphobe (not that I am accusing any of you of being so!) and that has never bothered me. And I didn't start receiving from the Chalice again until I began my reversion. I used to be an EMHC and I only felt right if I were giving the Precious Blood though. I felt so unworthy to hold the Host in my hands and I would usually be shaking a little by the time I was finished. I don't think I would ever become a EMHC again, simply because I don't think its my place. I'm all for reducing the number of EMHCs. Our pastor is always so concerned about keeping Masses short that he somewhat recently began having the EMHCs approach the altar during the Agnus Dei. And, they don't kneel either (although I suppose they don't have to). The first time we were to do this, we weren't sure what we were supposed to do then, so I kneeled. Afterwards, we were told that it was not necessary. Although while we were there, everyone kneeled! Even the lady (who meant very well) who told us it was not needed. Ugh. Things would be shorter if we only gave communion under one species. I know some parishes only have one Mass for the Sunday liturgy where they give the Precious Blood. If we started that at our parish, we would have a riot break out! Goodness, I think I have turned this into a bit of a rant. I'm sorry if I have detracted from the original purpose of this thread... They use a Purificator to wipe the germs away, don't they? I would imagine it is mostly to insure that no drop of Precious Blood fall to the ground or something like that and to purify/clean the Chalice. (They always told us to use more than one section of the purificator, but I never did. Now it all makes sense...)

BG45
I know some Protestant denominations have Communion Sunday (maybe once a month?) and they have wine or grape juice on those days, but the friend I'm thinking of told me each member was given his/her own little tiny wine glass. It sounded "cute" and also a little paranoid; I controlled myself and didn't laugh.
At my old church it was once a month, and at mom's now as well. At my old church currently they've changed it to once a quarter between "people may not realize it's important" and "familiarity breeds contempt". And yes, my mother loves the little grape juice glasses, because she's a germo-phobe; and when you don't have a high alcohol content to help kill bacteria, that's a valid concern.
Right on. Welcome home.
Thanks
johnnydigit
i receive from the chalice when it is available and i am not in any way sick. some practical reasons, +it helps wash down the host. +it makes me feel good. i try not to drink alcohol, so even a tiny bit of the Precious Blood makes me all warm and tingly inside. +it enhances the experience. it is like i am St. John next to Jesus at the Last Supper, and He says, "take ye, and drink from it". it is like i am at the foot of the Cross, and an angel has collected His Blood gushing out from His side into the chalice. there's tons of blood and water typology and symbolism that one can ponder on. -i fear i may develop a cold sore. the first time after many years, i received from the chalice and the very next day i developed the first cold sore ever on my lip. it seems the only times i have ever had cold sores, were after i received from the chalice. now, i try not to let the chalice touch the inside of my lip. -i fear that i may get sick, again. i fear that i may spill some on myself, again. so in a small way it is a test of faith and trust for me. scardella
I receive under both species. I figure regular contact with germs builds up my immunity. Plus, Jesus tastes better in the form of the Precious Blood.
