CatherineM
If we couldn't wear hoodies, and many other layers, to mass here, it would be pretty empty. Our pastor is from India, and he wears sweatshirts under his alb, sometimes more than one. As to being sloppy, I purposely wear very simple, basic, mostly loose dark clothing, as a form of penance for my previous high fashion addiction. People who know me well, or have read my book, understand why. No one else had ever said anything about it to my face.

goldenchild17
Or I guess I should say, am I planning to wear the wrong thing to Mass? Because I haven't gone yet. I got dressed this morning in a long blue skirt and a blue dress shirt. Then I put on my grey Phatmass hoodie and zipped up. Last were the black granny style orthopedic shoes I have to wear for now (I hurt my foot.) So I'm ready to leave for Mass, and I plop down at the computer to check my email and a person (who shall remain nameless, since you people know of her) says to me: "You're wearing that??" Me: Yeah, so what? Her: Don't you think that's too casual? Me: No, I'm wearing a skirt and a dress shirt. Her: A sweatshirt?!? Me: A phatmass sweatshirt? Her: Well, I can't be seen with you, if you're wearing that. I was so mad and upset, I didn't go to Mass with her. I guess I'll go to the LifeTeen one this afternoon (joyyyy.) Anyway, my question is: was my outfit "too casual" for Mass? It was definitely modest .. but too casual? (I guess I should have just taken my hoodie off, since it's a silly thing to fight over ... but I was SO annoyed! ) What's the line for "too casual" when it comes to Mass? I find myself talking more about modesty. But too casual can be a problem too, I guess.
Personally I'm not a big fan of it, but technically I think you're fine. There are a couple girls who go to our ultra-crazy conservative Mass here who wear hoodies and put the hood on for their head covering.
Aloysius
I won't comment on whether it's too casual or not because I can't really picture it too well, but I don't think that's the biggest issue of the event... your friend should not have spoken like that. sure, it would make sense not to want to be seen with someone dressed immodestly, but to not want to be seen with someone just because they dressed "too casually" in your opinion is an example of the type of hypocrisy Our Lord admonished on a daily basis during His earthly life. I am in favor of working towards getting people to dress more formally in general, but to have a snobbish attitude towards anyone just because they have casual clothes on is a terribly unChristian thing and shouldn't be stood for among Catholics. Groo the Wanderer
My daughter wears her Phatmass hoodie to Mass all the time. Of course she removes it before putting on the alb is she is serving at the altar or before approaching the ambo as a cantor
