Lilllabettt
Or I guess I should say, am I planning to wear the wrong thing to Mass? Because I haven't gone yet. I got dressed this morning in a long blue skirt and a blue dress shirt. Then I put on my grey Phatmass hoodie and zipped up. Last were the black granny style orthopedic shoes I have to wear for now (I hurt my foot.) So I'm ready to leave for Mass, and I plop down at the computer to check my email and a person (who shall remain nameless, since you people know of her) says to me: "You're wearing that??" Me: Yeah, so what? Her: Don't you think that's too casual? Me: No, I'm wearing a skirt and a dress shirt. Her: A sweatshirt?!? Me: A phatmass sweatshirt? Her: Well, I can't be seen with you, if you're wearing that. I was so mad and upset, I didn't go to Mass with her. I guess I'll go to the LifeTeen one this afternoon (joyyyy.) Anyway, my question is: was my outfit "too casual" for Mass? It was definitely modest .. but too casual? (I guess I should have just taken my hoodie off, since it's a silly thing to fight over ... but I was SO annoyed! ) What's the line for "too casual" when it comes to Mass? I find myself talking more about modesty. But too casual can be a problem too, I guess.
icelandic_iceskater
that doesn't sound too casual! I mean, wearing a zippie is like wearing a coat, and people keep their coats on at mass all the time (at least at my parish) but then again I don't really know anything about what's appropriate for mass and all that. today I wore blue jeans, a plaid cammi, a simple purple shirt, and a blue zippie because I'm always cold. that's generally the least casual clothing that I'll wear to mass, except for when I wear a shirt from a retreat. Saint Therese
I once saw a girl at Mass with her thong over her pants in the back. I think y ou're safe wearing what you had on. I don't see anything wrong with wearing a Phatmass hoodie. Edited April 5, 2009 by Saint Therese
IcePrincessKRS
Her: Well, I can't be seen with you, if you're wearing that.
I think your attire sounds fine. I think of zip up hoodies as jackets. It's not as if you were wearing torn jeans or something. The line I quoted from your post, though, leaves her sounding very prideful. She should worry less about what you're wearing and more about preparing herself spiritually for Mass.
Saint Therese
I would say if the clothes are modest that's the most inportant thing.
Mr.Cat
I would want to be seen with you! But honestly, that isnt too bad. When going to Mass I think as long as you are properly dressed you are fine. Some people don't have the clothes to dress up and some people honestly arn't sure how to dress, or in this case cannot...? Be understanding, accepting, and chairtable that people actually make it to Mass!
Lilllabettt
Yeah, I don't want to make her look bad. I have had a health set back recently, (besides the foot) so I have not been easy to deal with. The main complaint is, I guess, is according to this person I look "sloppy." My skirt is rather billowy and shapeless. Although the PM hoodie is pretty "tailored' as far as hoodies go. I styled my hair and everything. I thought maybe it had to do with the other people in our "entourage" ... they're all dressed up for Palm Sunday, party length (modest) skirts and heels. So maybe I'd stick out real bad. But I can't wear heels right now, and granny orthopedics just look ridiculous with a shorter skirt. I fil-tha-fide all my dress pants going to work as a nanny for a poopy vomity baby this week. I guess I should have planned better, but I didn't think it would be a problem ...
Lilllabettt
Okay, my Mom just told me a funny story ... when she first got married, her parents hadn't met my Dad yet. So my Mom invited them over, and was super nervous about the whole thing. They decided to all get in the car and go to the Mall and enjoy each others company for a little bit. So, they all piled into the car. And Grandma said to Grandpa "Charlie, don't you think those pants are too dirty to wear out?" And Grandpa proceeds to unzip his pants and then tear them apart by the seams! And my Mom was thinking : "oohhhh no my husband is going to think by parents need to go to belleview." So even though I threw an immature tiff, at least I didn't rip up my phatmass hoodie!!! (as if I ever could, wonderfully made and precious thing that it is)
StColette
You were dressed fine. You were wearing a skirt and shirt, which is pretty common attire for Mass. I wear my phatmass zip up hoodie occasionally to Mass 1. because it's sometimes cold in there and I don't feel like draggin along a heavy coat or wearing a sweater that I can't take off lol 2 because I have a little one that likes to drool and spit up so either wearing the hoodie saves my nicer clothes or I can put it on if he spits up on me lol You were properly attired, your jacket could be seen as an expression of your faith. I've had numerous people, older people even, ask what Phatmass was or loved the design on the jacket.

Saint Therese
It would be cool to dress up as a nun and go to Mass.
MissyP89
I wear a coat/hoodie almost all the time at Mass. Then again, I'm also in jeans pretty much 24/7. Were all the essential body parts covered, and did you feel okay with it? If so, don't worry about it.
Luthien
I don't think so.
Lilllabettt
Okay everyone, I kissed and made up with that other person! I am going through a tough time right now, so I think I overreacted a teensy tiny bit. That other person is not really a clothes nazi; she wears dressy jeans to Mass a lot. We just caught each other at the wrong moment, you know? She has pride in some areas, but she usually does not care a rat's hiney about this kind of thing, so I think she was just trying to zing me in a funny haha way with the "I can't be seen with you" comment. Of course, I am hyper sensitive at the moment and did not take it that way. Anyway ... I do usually dress up a lot for Mass, and I prefer that. But I am not opposed to jeans. Sweat pants, okay maybe. Shorts ... eh. I'm not much one for shorts at Mass. That is not a modesty thing though, since they make long "boy shorts" which don't reveal more than some skirts do ...
