angelica
Knowing that Jesus is innocent, Pilate still condemns Jesus to be scourged according to the manner of the Romans. The guards are ordered to conduct Jesus to the forum, which they do with the utmost brutality, loading him with abuse, and striking him with their staffs. These cruel men, carrying whips, rods and ropes, had many times scourged poor criminals to death at this pillar. The executioners barbarously knock him down against the pillar. There is a large iron ring at the top, and both rings and hooks. They tear off the mantle with which he had been clothed in mockery at the court of Herod, and they almost throw him face down again. His hands are bloody and swollen from all the abuse he has already received from his enemies. The only return Jesus makes when his brutal executioners strike and abuse him is to pray for them in them most touching manner. He turns his face once towards his Mother, who is standing overcome with grief. Jesus puts his arms around the pillar and when his hands are thus raised, the archers fasten them to the iron ring which is at the top of the pillar. They drag his arms to such a height that his feet, which are tightly bound to the base of the pillar, scarcely touch the ground. Thus is the Holy of holies violently stretched, without a particle of clothing, on a pillar used for the punishment of the greatest criminals. 7.
8th Hail Mary Meditation The first two furious ruffians who were thirsting for his blood begin in the most barbarous manner to scourge his sacred body from head to foot. The whips or scourges which they use are made of a species of flexible white wood; they were composed of the muscle of the ox, or strips of leather. Our Loving Lord, the Son of God, true God and true Man, writhes as a worm under the blows of these barbarians. His mild but deep groans may be heard from afar; they resound through the air, forming a kind of touching accompaniment to the hissing of the instruments of torture. These groans resemble rather a touching cry of prayer and supplication, than moans of anguish. The two ruffians continue to strike our Lord with unremitting violence for a quarter of an hour, and are then succeeded by two others. His body is entirely covered with black, blue and red marks; the blood is trickling down on the ground. The two fresh executioners commence scourging Jesus with the greatest possible fury. They make use of a different kind of rod--a species of thorny stick, covered with knots and splinters. The blows from these sticks tear his flesh to pieces, his blood spouts out so as to stain their arms, and he groans, prays, and shudders. Two fresh executioners take the places of the last mentioned, who were beginning to flag. Their scourges are composed of small chains, or straps covered with iron hooks, which penetrate to the bone, and tear off large pieces of flesh at every blow. The cruelty of these barbarians is nevertheless not yet quenched. They untie Jesus and again fasten him up with his back turned towards the pillar. As he is totally unable to support himself in an upright position, they pass cords round his waist, under his arms, and above his knees. They recommence scourging him with even greater fury than before and one among them strikes him constantly on the face with a new rod. The body of our Lord is perfectly torn to shreds--it is but one wound. He looks at his torturers with his eyes filled with blood, as if entreating mercy; but their brutality appears to increase, and his moans each moment become more feeble. The dreadful scourging continues without intermission for three quarters of an hour. During the time of the scourging of her Divine Son, Jesus' mother Mary saw and suffered with inexpressible love and grief all the torments he was enduring. She groans feebly, and her eyes are red with weeping. At the termination of the scourging, Mary sees her Divine Son all torn and mangled, being led away by the archers after the scourging; he wipes his eyes, which are filled with blood, that he might look at his Mother, and she stretches out her hands towards him, and continues to look at the bloody traces of his footsteps. Mary and Mary Magdalen, a friend of Jesus and his mother's, soon approach the pillar where Jesus had been scourged and wipe up the blood with which it and the ground around it were saturated. 8. angelica
{I posted the Sorrowful Mystery meditation a little late, forgive me, but below is the Crowning of Thorns} 9th Hail Mary The Crowning of Thorns Meditation A gallery encircles the inner court of the guard-house where our Lord is to be crowned with thorns, and the doors are open. The cowardly ruffians, who are eagerly waiting to gratify their cruelty by torturing and insulting our Lord, are about fifty in number. The laughter and applause by the soldiers stationed there redoubles the cruelty of the executioners. In the middle of the court there stands the fragment of the pillar, and on it is placed a very low stool which these cruel men maliciously cover with sharp flints and bits of broken potsherd. Then they tear off the garments of Jesus, thereby reopening all his wounds; they throw over his shoulders an old scarlet mantle which barely reaches his knees and drag him to the seat prepared. They push him roughly down upon it, having first placed the crown of thorns upon his head. The crown of thorns is made of three branches plaited together, the greatest part of the thorns being purposely turned inwards so as to pierce our Lord's head. Having first placed these twisted branches on his forehead, they tie them tightly together at the back of his head. No sooner is this accomplished to their satisfaction, they then put a large reed into his hand, doing all with sarcastic seriousness as if they are really crowning him king. They then seize the reed, and strike his head so violently that his eyes fill with blood. They kneel before him, mock him, spit in his face, and beat him, saying at the same time, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they throw down his stool, pull him up again from the ground on which he had fallen and reseat him with the greatest possible brutality. The cruel outrages which were thought of and perpetrated by the executioners are impossible to describe. The sufferings of Jesus from thirst, caused by the fever which his wounds and sufferings had brought on, are intense. He trembles all over, his flesh is torn piece by piece, his tongue contracted. The only refreshment he receives is the blood which trickles from his head on to his parched lips. This shameful scene is protracted a full half-hour, and the Roman soldiers continue during the whole time to applaud and encourage the perpetration of still greater outrages.
