They had one of the Canadian government's cyber-terrorist guys on the news last night, and he said that this worm has instructions embedded to download additional instructions April 1st, so that could be when it is set to go off, or is just an elaborate hoax. Considering that Bill Gates has put up $250,000 to catch the people responsible, I doubt that they think it is a hoax. This cyber guy also said that a way to check to see if you have it is by trying to log onto anti-virus websites like Mcafee or AVG. This worm is designed to make it hard to remove, so it will fight you trying to log onto sites that might be able to help you remove it.

This may seem dumb... but how do you get this? I am a one computer user, not someone on a big network...

I mean will I get this by simply turning on my PC? I haven't turned it on in weeks (I use my Mac 99% of the time...)

As long as you have a firewall up, fire sharing off, and have the latest updates, you'll be fine. The vulnerability that this worm exploits was patched last October.

As far as I understand, the concern is more that the worm looks like it's about to start doing something on April 1. So far it's only been spreading.

:P

No worms, sorry. You'll have to settle for the ability to easily destroy your own system.

The guy on the news last night said that there were 4-5 versions, and one version was being spread by USB ports. I guess people that use thumb drives to transfer info between their work/school computer and home computer, or public terminals like at libraries. I guess friends file share too like that. I guess they don't make condoms for thumb drives, so abstinence is best.

What I have done in the past worked wonderfully to avoid initiation. If they are right, most authorities believe it's set to do it's bad stuff on April 1st. All I did in the past and again this time is to temporarily change the calendar date on the computer. Mine now reflects that today is April 2, 2009. In a few days, I'll return it to the proper date.

Just click on the 'time' usually located on the lower right side of your monitor. The calendar will open. Simply change the date (Before or after April 1) - If the predicted instruction are in fact based on that date, it will not be recognized and can't follow it's instructions.

Well, it's April Fool's Day now on the East Coast, and I don't see any problems online yet!

That assumes it uses logic of {If SystemDate = "04-01-2009"} when it could just have easily used logic of {If SystemDate > "03-31-2009"}. Given the adept software engineering that this virus uses, I wouldn't bet on them using the simpler logic. You're better off putting the date backwards if anything. But given how much this virus updates itself with its own random web sites, it probably times itself based on a calendar found on those sites, too.
