So if Chinese surface Ships were active in the gulf and tracking our subs while working with what we considered an enemy power what do yu think the popular reaction would be?
They probably are. This incident took place 125 miles out to sea in international waters. It was an unarmed naval vessel with a civilian merchant marine crew. The U.S. vessel was conducting ocean surveys Sunday in international waters in the South China Sea. THe Chinese tried to grab the gear off the ship with grappling hooks. Somehow I doubt you would find a US ship trying that.
CatherineM
That's what the USNS means. It stands for United States Naval Ship. It's not a USS which are designations for US war ships. USNS ships are things like hospital ships, supply ships, research vessels, and salvage/rescue ships. They are typically unarmed.
rkwright
Why would our subs be in the gulf of mexico... Our subs are sitting off the coast of world hot spots in case we need a quick attack. BTW I've visited the sub fleet bases in Groton (SP?) Connecticut. The other one is out of San Diego (I think...). My fiancé's cousin is an officer on an attack sub. I got to talk to him for a few hours at a family party. Very interesting stuff! He is stationed out of Japan right now...

CatherineM
When my brother Ray was in subs during Vietnam, he got to go under the polar ice. As to where else he might have gone, he's never been able to say. I guess that means fun places.

kenrockthefirst
This kind of incident seems to be standard operating procedure for the Chinese. I guess they want to test the new administration. You will of course remember that in the early days of the Bush presidency there was an incident in which a US surveillance plane was harassed by Chinese fighter jets. There was a midair collision which caused one of the Chinese jets to crash and forced the US surveillance plane to land on Chinese soil.

The talk went something like this "China is positioning itself as a rising superpower correct?" -yes "We are the current only superpower correct?" -yes "We have planes over their terratorial waters condicting suverliance missions, correct?" -I suppose "How many Chinese planes are conducting suverlence missions over our waters?" -.......... His point was it was an embarasment for the Chinese (not that he was saying that was good or bad). They want to show a fron to the world of being a great power, while they are doing that we are exercising a military presence which we would never tolerate from China. That's not to say we should or shouldn't. But how would we feel if the Chinese were conducting simmilar missions?

The point is usually we don't aggressively harass them to the point that anyone could get hurt, or try to grab equipment off their boats. Even spies have standards , and the chinese have broken them, hence the outcry.

Winchester
We were probably spying. Luckily, I'm a jingo, so the Chinese are clearly wrong. They should have to move out. And probably pay us some kind of penalty.
