Jutty1224
Our music director has chosen Michael Joncas' hymn I Have Loved You as the entrance hymn for this sunday. I was singing it to myself and it just doesn't seem like the type to sing for entrance, its most meditative and would sound better at offertory or communion. What do you think? She has originally planned for us to sing Led By The Spirit but thought that we probably didn't know it.
cmotherofpirl
I would start with the "Glory of these 40 Days" and use the other one as Communion.
Resurrexi
I would agree that "I Have Loved You" is inappropriate the entrance hymn. Actually, I don't think it's appropriate in the liturgy since it's so banal. The introit from the Graduale Romanum would have been much more appropriate. BTW, I do support contemporary hymns. Contemporary chant and polyphonic hymns, that is (yes they do exist).

Resurrexi
Most hymnals do have at least some chant (though it may be a very small amount).

Resurrexi
Since chant is really just a plain melody with no harmony a lot of it isn't very difficult to learn quickly.
MissyP89
Yeah, that's pretty weird that they're using it as an entrance hymn. We've done it as both an offertory and communion hymn, but entrance doesn't seem to fit...
CatherineM
You want something at the processional that gets people focused and prepared to participate in the liturgy. More meditative things might put people into a frame where they aren't really listening to the readings.

They want to sing songs that everyone knows so everyone can participate. They don't want Latin, or anything fancy, because frankly, we can't afford it. Our biggest fight is that I won't sing Father's favorite polish hymn at our irish parish funerals , like he makes us do at the polish church. I told him I would only sing polish here if I could sing gaelic there.
