CatherineM
I had a friend who just came back from one of those old lady tour junkets. She said the churches they went to there used a really nice grade of Cabernet for their communion wine. You could get him a small bottle of the stuff the churches get to use there, for his personal masses. You know, see how the other half lives. tinytherese
I know this priest outside of simply going to mass. I'm his volunteer assistant at RCIA.

A tourist makes an easier mark because they have their mind on other matters, they sometimes don' t speak the language well, the local constable will side with locals, and the tourist will never be back... Back to the topic at hand: A nice bottle of wine would be nice, if he drinks wine. I'd recommend getting something that inspires you, don't make up your mind until you see what's there. But stay under $20.

TotusTuusMaria
... this might be late... but visit the shrine of Bl. Anna Maria Taigi in Rome. Ask if they have any relics of her. They do. They come with the documents as well. They are first class. It is a donation of 10 Euro. She was a married saint, but she was very helpful to the Pope of her time and the local priests. She was a mystic. Edited March 23, 2009 by TotusTuusMaria

You can get the same statues for much less at other shrines and places or even here in the states.
TotusTuusMaria
You could get him a papal blessing on parchment. That is always nice. http://vatican.usembassy.gov/Vatican/Blessings.asp Many of the little shops in the Vatican can take care of all of that for you. Just walk into one and tell them you would like to get a papal blessing. Then when it arrives to him he will be very surprised... I did that for my family. They framed it. For mail and the costs of them taking care of all the details for me it was about 15 euro. It really depends on the parchment you like. you can get the for much less on smaller parchment. Also, you can send him a postcard. Edited March 23, 2009 by TotusTuusMaria
