So I'm heading off to Italy soon for spring break and I thought that it would be a nice idea to get a gift for the parish priest at the town of my college. I'll be going to teh Vatican and I thought that it would be cool to get him something from the gift shop there. Got any suggestions?

Nihil Obstat

A hip flask with the Vatican flag on it.

For carrying holy water. ;)

Emergency baptisms, you know.

How much are you looking to spend on the gift? There are so many cool things to get there! Although, the best stores to shop at aren't actually at the Vatican, they are nearby.

The Pope wears PJs?

He looks more like the boxers-only type.

He's from Germany. Boxer only guys are from warm climates. Besides, he's an older guy. Older guys are always cold.

I totally know someone who wants to steal the popes hat and then make a get away in the pope-mobile. :lol_roll:

Nothing oober expensive. That may make him feel guilty or embarassed for accepting such a gift.

There's a lto of cheesy stuff available - sold in Italy but made in sweat shops overseas. Of course you can find some stuff, too, but sometimes you have to look pretty hard for it.

If somebody on the street tries to sell you something that ben blessed by the Pope, it probably has been, but all that means is that the guy had the item on his person at the noon blessing on Sunday or Wednesday - when I was there, about half a dozen of these guys opened their coats like flashers when the Pope gave his blessing, and the coats were lined with rosaries, holy cards, statuettes - it was incredible.

I'd aim for something small & cute - a refrigerator magnet of St. Peter's - or something consumable - I like Italian cologne, but that might be too personal for a priest. If he doesn't abstain from alcohol, you might bring back a small bottle of Limoncello (often hand painated), Sambucca (I can't stand the stuff, myself), or a bottle of wine. Just be sure you enclose it in a water-tight palstic bag before you pack it - if it breaks in transit...
