Fear Of Flying?

Recommended Posts

So not so long ago I got an e-mail from an honors society I'm in inviting me to participate in a program where you flay to China, stay there for a large chunk of the summer, and hop around China who participating in a language immersion program. My first reaction was something like "h e double hocky sticks no!".

Why?

Because of the flight. Both to China and once there to various locations within China.

I guess this was the first time that I was confronted with the fact that my fear of flying would be getting in the way of my career (whatever it is). I have forced myself to fly before but any elective flying, even if it's a great oppertunity, are immediatly excluded. Has anyone overcome a fear of flying, and if so how?

Also Russia, I want to go study there for a semester and could prolly get the grant money to go, but the reason I wouldn't would be the flying.

I had a great fear of flying. I never flew until two years ago.

I conquered it by making sure I was on the flight with people I consider holy (a very good priest and sister). I figure God must have big plans for them and since they probably would not be on a flight that went down then I wouldn't be going down either. :D

Once I was on the flight though I learned that very, very few flights actually ever go down. Very very very very low percent. It is rare. And when you are flying over the ocean there are these little boats that come out of the plane... that was comforting. It really isn't that scary once you are up in the air.

It is always nice to be prepared though. Try to get a seat near the back, you are more likely to survive and write a will before taking off :D

You shouldn't let fears dictate huge things like this that could change the direction your life goes and have a big impact on you as a student and just in general.

Trains derail.
And so forth.
You're more likely, statistically, to be killed by a falling coconut or donkey kick than a plane crash.
You're exponentially more likely to be killed by a drunk driver.
I don't know what else to say to help you. I've been flying since I was little, and flying anyplace is generally one of my favourite parts of the trip.
I assume you've flown before?

I know. But even when I do "just do it" it's an exhausting ordeal both psychologically and physically. I can do it once I get there but the anxiety and exhaustion that comes before getting there is just so sapping and I want to get over it.

perhapse it's because kitties arn't allowed on board :detective:

Pray a rosary while in the air. It will work wonders. :D

You don't like kitties anyway really, so it is probably for the best. :)

Sure, but phobias are not rational usually.

I do try to keep that in mind though. :)
