Winchester
So I'm on this other board. It's for writers. They're up in arms about Stephen King acknowledging how crappy the writer of the Twilight series is. Truth is never popular. But I'm not really interested in the adult conversation going on about whether a writer should say those kinds of things about someone who stinks at writing. So I post this:
Yes, teenage boys have strong emotions. But the weak emotions must be carefully weeded out and crushed. Crushed, ground to meal and burned, leaving only the strong emotions. Emotions like break and smash, build and be right all the time. If the weak emotions are fed, you end up with an emo or a weird, curly haired singer. That's not good, because who will smash things if our boys are too busy applying black eyeliner or diddling about on pianos? Who will build things like White Castles or herd cattle so we can eat them? No one, that's who. We'll end up eating vegetables and living with wild cows, like they do in India. But not as colorful.
Charming. Funny. Accurate. Not to this person:
I happen to come from those vegetable eating Indians who live with wild cows. We're a very happy people. Jai
I'm thinking she's kind of joking a bit, playing along. I say:
The cows made you say that.
Not kidding.
Maybe you didn't notice, but I'm not laughing. Keep your bigoted remarks to yourself. Jai
It's weird she would think I might not notice she's not laughing. We're not on a camera phone. Me:
Sorry. Thought your location note indicated a certain humor as concerns people's cultures and countries. Bigotry doesn't motivate me.
Her:
You know nothing about me and nothing about my culture. You definitely know nothing about my location so your sarcasm doesn't impress me. It's very clear that you're motivated by bigotry. You make one more remark about my culture like that and I'll be making a formal complaint about you. Winchester
Wow. Excited. Me:
Honestly, how seriously can you take a guy who said "smash" is an emotion? I only know what it says: "Location: Texas, etcetera," and I thought it indicated a certain grim resignation about living amongst the sort of people who think "smash" is an emotion. Really, look at my original comment. The only place I could think of was India in connection with cows--really, the idea that reading Twilight would lead to utter chaos and feminized boys. If I believed any of that, wouldn't it be beneath you to respond, anyway? Would someone like that be open to any kind of reason? I didn't set out to offend anyone and thought the post was suitably asinine. Then I though you were joking along--my bad on the misread, there. Not sarcasm, merely an explanation. I hope you're not confusing me with the guy who made the surgery comment--not me. That was not something intended to be ridiculous, whereas my intent was merely to be asinine. Don't you think I'm asinine? It's not clear I'm motivated by bigotry. Actually, it's not clear if I've attained the level where any life philosophy motivates me. It's clear I say ludicrous things. It's clear I'm threatened by Josh Grobhan (that's more subtext, I guess. If one knew what a fan I was of the Pet Shop Boys in school, one might argue about some latent tendencies and a possible reaction to mascara on boys based on that, but no one knows about that, so they can only guess why I have an obsessive need to make snide comments about rather attractive easy listening singer).
Her:
Whether I take you seriously or not leaves plenty of room for me to be disgusted by you. If this last post of yours is supposed to serve as your apology then apology accepted. If it's not an apology but rather a "snide comment", as you so fittingly describe your posts, then I'm not surprised. As it is, I can't tell. I have no idea what you're talking about when you mention "the surgery comment". Jai
Me: Disgusted? I'm thinking maybe it's Havok or the Vindivitive guy. But they're not Indian.
It wasn't an apology, but an explanation. This is an apology: I'm sorry my attempt at humor offended you.

I removed the offensive reference to India. I replaced it with England, since no one likes the English since the Pythons broke up.
Her:
Oh really? Well it might surprise you to know that I was born and bred in England. Can you make a joke that doesn't insult someone's country? How's that for a challenge? - Ok, now I am joking. Except for the part about being born and bred in England. I really was. Jai
No, it doesn't surprise me because she's mentioned that before. It was intentional, which probably makes me a donkey. I'm still not sure if she's joking. If she is, then I'm in love. rose wrought of iron
I'm slightly confused... Was this on phatmass? And I think it's silly to take offense at your comments about cows and India - everyone makes jokes like that about pretty much every country/region on the map. Whoo-hoo. Now move on with your life. Winchester
Well, I've tried to patch things up by writing this:
I've always believed public offense requires public apology. Recently, I made some a joke that included a reference to India, which is peopled entirely with Indians, as I just learned from Wikipedia. It offended someone on the board, who happens to be of Indian descent. Offence was never my intent, and certainly, I did not mean to portray myself as a bigot. I actually have no strongly held beliefs. I've always felt strongly held beliefs were dangerous and that people with strongly held beliefs should be taken to camps and reprogrammed. And Indians. I have nothing but respect for Indians and their culture. I can't tell you how many times I've watched "Dances With Wolves"--it's one of my all-time favorite movies. The image we have in the US of warlike people is simply incorrect. The Indians had two-hundred words for "friend," but only one for "disembowel with an axe" and only went to war when their families were threatened, or if they really wanted something someone else had and that someone was too selfish to share. In fact, the term "Indian" is incorrect. It was given to them by Cristopher Columbus--later, adding insult to injury, when they were majority of Indians were moved out of the US, their country was named "India." I had no intention of offending anyone or dredging up painful reminders of the past.

You should ask her if she has any heritage that you haven't insulted yet, so as to make sure your bases are covered. You wouldn't want to miss any chances to make a "greasy Italian" or "dumb Pole" remark. Edited February 12, 2009 by USAirwaysIHS
