In theory, the Vatican still defends all the removed verses even if she now promotes Bibles based on scholarship of the original texts, because she re-affirms the Council of Trent and thereby considers the Vulgate to be without doctrinal error and worthy of being accepted as sacred scripture. Since there are no completely original texts, we can never say we've gone back to the original; it is always possible that St. Jerome had manuscripts that are no longer available to us; and really, without something authoritative from the Church we could really never trust any Bible at all... but the Vulgate alone can be completely trusted because it alone has the full weight and force of an Ecumenical Council.

That is not to say we consider the Vulgate the best translation, nor that we do not value getting back to the best possible understanding of the scriptures as originally written; but the Vulgate should represent to Catholics a form of the Bible which was guarded through the centuries by the Holy Spirit not to necessarily be the pure original, but to be a doctrinally solid copy... with authors inspired by the Holy Spirit and translators (ie St. Jerome) protected by the Holy Spirit against error; or at least in any event, ratified by a Council protected by the Holy Spirit

First of all I wouldn't associate with a Protestant Bible Study, as they are bereft of truth. You will get more out of reading commentaries by Saints, Doctors, and the Fathers.

As for the criticism, it appears to be a criticism of the New American Bible, which I can't blame the Protestant for finding fault with. The problem is he uses this as an attack on the Church.

If you intend to stay with the group, be prepared to have your Faith attacked more often.

+J.M.J.+
if you can get your hands on this month's copy of "This Rock" magazine, they address Acts 8:37 in their Quick Questions segment.
