Maggyie
There are other violent verses in the Bible but that is the one that comes to mind first.
Lilllabettt
How do we interpret 'violent' verses in the Bible?
The violent parts of the New Testament are in historical frame. The Lord commands the Israelites to wipe out certain tribes, at certain times. The scripture from Numbers that Maggie quotes is actually against a certain tribe of pagans. It seems harsh, but since God is merciful, we can be sure that this is what was best for the Jews, best for the pagans, and best for us. These are, then, not prescriptions for future behavior, but a record of what God asked the Israelites to do at a certain time. Where as the violent verses in the Qur'an have more of a general perspective .. they are intended as teachings of how Muslims should act from then on. They do not mind if non-Muslims help them in that effort.
Hassan
There are other violent verses in the Bible but that is the one that comes to mind first.
yeah, perhapse I don't see how one can reconcile the figure of Jesus with the God of the Old Testament. I look at the Old Testament and I see a figure who moves from a henotheistic tribal god of the armies to a loving if jelous global God who is the only God to a trinitarian God of love. But this is my limitation. Perhapse I feel that objective scholarship supports my view and one can only see a continuity if they wish to, but there are plenty of Christians, in general and acadamics, who are mush smarter and wiser than I who can see such a continuity. Perhapse some here will never see Islam as anything other than a bloddy tribal god commanding his warrior prophet Muhammad to hack apart Jews and Christians in his bloodlust and grab as many women as he can to satisfy his Labido, but such people need to recognise that people are are both smarter and wiser than them see quite a different religion. Perhapse these people are wrong and objective scholarship is opposed to it, but why they feel the need to combat attempts to promote such an understanding I do not know.
