jeffpugh
On topic please Get over yourselves. You're all getting spiteful again. Anywho, my contribution... (cause I know my "intervention" will be snarled at unless I say something about this). I think I agree w/ Mme V (again). There seems to be a strong leaning on possibly jihadists causing this. I think it is neccessary to try and deal with the situation in whatever reasonable way. There was talks of thinking outside the box... I think burning forests in Australia constitutes "thinking outside the box" because the place is dry and vegetation doesn't spring up like crazy. It would be quite a terrifying thing having one's homeland reduced to desert and ashes.

I do find it disturbing that the news item goes totally ignored while at the same time accusations are being made about conspiracies. It's like ignoring a white elephant in the room. "Let's ignore yet another of the thousands of jihadist threats and calls for violence, and instead attack someone for daring to post about such threats." Lilllabettt
Well, looks like the Australians have arrested somebody Guardian article 39 year old, native to Victoria, with child porn, going for a psych eval. I think its safe to say this was not a fire jihad. There would have been a claim of responsibility by now. If you would like to read Al Jazeera's take on the fires, here it is. Terror watchdogs said fundamentalists had blogged on websites across the globe, applauding the lives lost and destruction in the Victoria fires. Senior analyst at SITE Intelligence Group Adam Raisman said they were posting pictures of burnt homes and devastated victims and "taking joy in the scenes", the Sunday Herald Sun reports. One jihadist wrote: "It would be an act of revenge for Australian's participation in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq." Bushfires victims said they were stunned. "We're minding our own business and trying to cope with all this and they are celebrating our suffering," said Denise McCann who lost her home in the Kinglake blaze. Regional Islamic Council vice-president Dr Ameer Ali said the comments did not represent the wider Muslim community. "They have no idea what they are talking about," he said.
Unfortunately for Dr. Ali, the Koran--which advocates and encourages "jihad against the infidels by any means necessary"--says he's wrong. Lilllabettt
This is my pet peeve, when people say what Islam means. Islam does not mean peace, as in kumbaya. And Islam does not mean submission as in, as in, submit to the invading muslim hoards Islam means "submission to the will of God." In Christianity the obsession is love. In Islam, it is not about love. The obsession is perfect submission and obedience to God. That is why they pray the way they do, in the submissive pose. There are more than 70 different Muslim sects in the world And they all have their different interpretations of their scripture. They are a lot like Protestants that way. There are even "Quaran Aloners" who don't believe in adding any hadiths to the book. As Catholics we know that you cannot read anything in a vacume. "I have come not to bring peace, but a sword" does not mean we should draw swords against non Christians. "Call no man father" does not mean we can't call anyone father. If you read through the Qu'ran and just take the literal interpretation of everything, you will get as much out of it as you'd get from reading any piece of literature that way. Which is not much. It is hard to find out what Muslims believe because they believe all kinds of different things. I found this out during my pagan days when I briefly considered converting to Islam. I know people who say "If Islam is a religion of peace, then where is the outrage and protest from the majority of Muslims when a minority of them act like idiots?" And yet here, in the article posted, there are some Muslims clicking their heels in glee over the fires. And then there is a prominent member of the Muslim community, a man who I know regularly gives lectures about how religion promotes peace, denouncing them and saying they don't know what they're talking about. And then there is Madame Vengier saying that she knows and understands what the Qu'ran "really" says better than he, a devout Islamic scholar, does. It really sounds arrogant. You can ignore the hundreds of violent and oppressive events happening around the world in the name of Islam and in the name of Koranic text on a daily basis, if that makes you feel better. If it sets your mind at ease that a few Islamic clerics preach peace while millions more practice violence and oppression, then you are more than welcome to focus on those aspects of Islam that you feel comfortable with. As for me, I'm going to go right on questioning the teachings of Islam and the actions of Muslims as long as there are wives getting beheaded by their husbands, daughters being killed at the hands of their fathers and brothers in the name of "family honor", young girls being punished for rape, people dying brutal deaths from bombings and other murderous acts, little girls being forced into marriage at the ages of 9/10/11, little 5 year old girls getting their genitals mutilated in the name of "chastity", and as long as there are countless cases of freedoms in the West being restricted in an effort to appease the Muslim minority. You can call me arrogant all you want because luckily my skin is a lot thicker than that.
